The First Meeting With The Midwife

Looking back on last night there is still one thing - above all - that sticks out about my midwife.

She wore toe socks. Not just any toe socks, my friend….rainbow toe socks.

The rest of her outfit was totally business casual. Pants, shirt, nice sweater…but man, those toe socks are haunting. Because you know there’s only one kind of person that wears them. The kind of person that wears toe socks, exactly! (If you are that person and now find yourself desperately craving toe socks you can buy your very own pair of rainbow toe socks at Sock Dreams.)

By the end of the night it was clear that she was pretty normal with a dash of interesting - and it was the dash that probably caused her to wear the toe socks.

Ok, here’s a real recap. I really haven’t been able to stop obsessing about the toe socks though. They are neither bad nor good…just different.

The Midwife Arrives

She called before coming over to verify we were still on and everything was good. She had my address in her GPS and told me that while her GPS has a tendency to be, “Optimistic” she should be there close to 7pm.

We finished putting clothes on our normally-naked children and brushed their hair so they didn’t look completely unkempt. Randy finished cleaning the kitchen while I worried myself sick and paced a lot.

At ten ’till seven Randy put on water for tea (I had learned during a previous conversation Christina the Midwife liked tea) and began making popcorn. Popcorn had two purposes:

  1. It’s a hippie-friendly low-calorie snack. We didn’t add salt or butter, either, to make sure it was plain.
  2. Popcorn made on a stove reeks. It permeated every room in the house with popcorn reek. That meant any unsavory smells (dog, kid, other) would be masked by the wall of popcorn smell the moment she opened the front door.

A car pulls up in the driveway and we get the dogs to the back room (we do this when new people come over - no one should be subjected to my little girls and dogs at the same time.) She comes in and she looks….normal.

Like completely, “See you at the PTA” normal. (Yes, I kind of expected someone that looked like one of the aunts from Practical Magic.)

But it was not to be. Which is okay because I didn’t really want her to be creepy - but I was prepared for it.

The Midwife Questions Us

She filled out a sheet just like an OB would have with history of labor, birthing stories, things to look out for, allergies, and all the other normal stuff that makes you feel like this might be totally normal after all.

She told me I needed to exercise more (what, seven minutes a day on the elliptical isn’t enough? LOL) by walking around the block or something. I agreed to, and what’s more, I’m going to try to get a little more exercise into the routine. Why not? It’s lovely out!

I showed her my excessive vitamin stash and she was impressed with everything except the Vitamin D. I need more…like…LOTS more. (Another note: On my vitamin stash I no longer take the tums for calcium, I take Lil Critters Calcium Gummy Bears with Vitamin D because the Vitamin D is already inside the gummy, which your body needs to process the calcium. They also taste divine.)

So I have to pick up some new, improved vitamin D tablets (D-3 of course!) and found a place to order them online. She also told me the kids should be getting it too but not in the excessively large dose I need, so I’m going to get those from VitaCost.

The Midwife Wrap Up

Everything seemed on the up and up the whole time, and I feel very comfortable when I think about her delivering my baby. I’m ok with this. Actually, truth be told I’m super excited.

She’s coming back for the next appointment March 21st and at that time we’ll do the lady parts exam and she’ll draw some blood. All from the comfort of my home! Interesting, right?!

I’m so excited to be on this journey!
