The Fit Empress’ Definition of Fitness

The Fit Empress began as a place for me to document my weight loss and fitness journey. A way to keep myself on track, or at the very least, accountable for when I fell off the wagon. However, as I began to blog more, I realized that losing weight and being fit meant a lot more than just spin class and measuring my basal metabolic rate. Fitness encompasses much more than that for me. There are actually many definitions of “fitness”:
- The state or condition of being physically sound and healthy, especially as the result of exercise and proper nutrition.
- A state of general mental and physical well-being.
- The state of being suitably adapted to an environment.
- To be in harmony; agree

When I began to think about fitness beyond just the physical, but also including general well-being of mind and spirit in harmony with my life and goals, I ended up with a much more complete idea of what being “fit” really means. Being healthy and strong definitely is part of that, but every part of our lives comes together to make us “fit”. You can be physically fit and emotionally depressed. You can be spiritually fulfilled and physically unhealthy. You can’t just work on one area and leave the rest to lie fallow. Relationships, spirituality, intellect, personal growth, etc. all combine with your physical health to help create the person you are meant to be. Working out like I’m training for the Olympics, eating the right combination of proteins, carbs and vegetables and drinking half my body weight in ounces of water daily is fine, but I soon realized that being able to fit into a sexy dress wasn’t really my ultimate goal. My ultimate goal is to be happy in all areas of my life (as much as possible anyway).

Looking at it through this lens, I realized that my journey had evolved into much more than tracking my weight loss on a spreadsheet. As my journey has evolved, so has this site. The Fit Empress is about health and fitness, but it is also about living, experiences, having fun, traveling, fashion, beauty, complete random acts of silliness and anything else that comes to along my path. Whatever inspires me to continue moving toward my goals, learn new things, or just create joy in my life and the world around me.
While I may have a post about how many miles I put in on the spin bike or trying out a new yoga class, I may also have a rambling manifesto piece on planning for the future. Which could also be followed by a review of a concert I went to, or how cute the new workout gear I bought is – all of it is housed within the broad umbrella concept of fitness I am now living under.
Long story short – being fit for me is about being comfortable in my own skin and the path it takes me to get there. That is what you’ll find here on the pages of The Fit Empress, and I hope that speaks to some of you enough to join me on the ride.
