I went to the gym a few days ago for my first visit. I spoke to a personal
trainer about my goals. Then, we went over to the workout ball and free
weights. I started by doing some squats from against the wall. Then, I
did some lunges with a weight in each hand. After that, I began to feel
some twinges in my thighs. I knew cramps would be on their way if I
wasn’t more careful. I explained this to the PT. He asked me how much
water I drink. I said, “None.” He asked me if I was
kidding and I assured him that I was not. He then stated, “You are
dehydrated, which is why you are cramping up so fast..” He said that
our “workout” was over, and instead, I should spend the rest of the day
drinking water. When he found out that I was drinking Diet Coke as a
daily beverage, he said that Diet Coke acts as a diuretic and that I
was actually pulling what little water I had out of my cells.
Therefore, I am SEVERELY dehydrated. I believe him, and it scared me…a
lot!
When he asked me what I ate the day before, it was
evident that I had only consumed 7 grams of protein. I am supposed to
eat about 80 grams each day. So, I discovered that I need to drink 64
ounces of water and consume 80 grams of protein, each day. It is
obvious to me that I need some initial guidance. So, I paid for 6 PT
sessions, which I will spread out over the next 4 weeks…just to get me
started in the right direction. I believe I am worth the expense.
I will track my daily nutrition and fitness in my FITDAY program.
