Fitness Friday: One Physical Therapy & Wellness

I’ll just say it: I love learning about fitness and wellness resources on the Main Line. I am a huge believer that physical activity is the foundation of happiness. As such, I was thrilled to learn about One Physical Therapy and Wellness.

One Physical Therapy and Wellness is located on County Line Road in Bryn Mawr, PA. One is a unique physical therapy clinic that specializes in offering one-on-one care as well as using Pilates as a form of treatment. They offer private and semi-private Pilates sessions as well as group classes. One Physical Therapy and Wellness is known for its ‘Back Care Pilates ‘class. One describes this class as a ‘Pilates-based Mat class designed for the post-rehab patient, especially for those with a history of back pain. It is also ideal for those wanting a gentle introduction to Pilates. Taught by a Physical Therapist and includes gentle core stabilization and stretching.’

My Introduction to Main Line Pilates

I met Meghan Tierney, PT, MPT, OCS, the owner, by chance at the Radnor Run in the Fall of 2013 while she was promoting her clinic. I was intrigued by her approach. I had never heard of a physical therapy clinic offering post-rehab care.

I have been to physical therapy on more than a few occasions for various sports-related injuries. I rather like physical therapy. I like the precision, I like the personal attention to my ailing parts, and I like learning how to manage and prevent physical pain. In many ways, I think physical therapy is akin to talk therapy. Click here for a further discussion on the parallels between physical therapy and talk therapy.

I took the Back Care Pilates class with Meghan. The individuals in the class ranged in functionality. They were warm and friendly and made me laugh from the moment I walked in. The class involved stretching, core strengthening and foundational Pilates moves. It was, in some ways, similar to a traditional Pilates mat class. The quality that made this class unique was the fact that Meghan was extremely attentive to her clients’ pain levels and made multiple accommodations (using pillows to support body parts, changing movements, and making recommendations) for clients with discomfort. It was incredibly evident that she knew her clients’ bodies very well. The class was great.

I was incredibly impressed by One Physical Therapy and Wellness. Most physical therapy clinics rely heavily on technicians to monitor and teach while the physical therapist has only a few minutes with each patient. Meghan Tierney and her staff of physical therapists insist on the highest level of patient care by providing physical therapy exclusively in one on one appointments. Meghan and her staff are carving out a niche for those individuals, like most of us, who benefit from strengthening and stretching after rehabbing an injury.
