A couple of weeks ago I wrote about five beauty DIY’s – five techniques/treatments/procedures I recommend doing yourself to save time and money. This time around I’d like to advise you on five things best left to trained professionals because while I’m all about DIY I’m nothing if not cautious.

1. Eyebrow/lash tinting. I had never even heard of this salon procedure before my office-mate told me she gets her eyelashes done once a month. The results are amazing (she has light brown eyelashes) and she never uses mascara. This, my friends, is a job for a skilled technician but I’d highly recommend it (about $25 in my city).
2. Waxing. I don’t care if we are talking about your upper lip or your upper thigh, you are never going to have the smooth clean look you desire by doing it yourself. Shop around if you are worried about prices but do keep in mind that the upscale spa-like salon employees are often better trained to deal with sensitive skin.
3. Highlights.Yes, I suggested you give home hair color a try; I have no problem urging you to pick up some L’Oreal in a box, but highlights (or lowlights for that matter) are a very different story. Stylists are better able to see how your hair lays on your head and plan more natural looking shimmers.
4. Facial peels. While there may be over-the-counter micro-dermabrasion kits for home use I am of the opinion that anything wherein the cells of my face may be altered enough to minimize “the look of fine lines” should really be done by a cosmetician/esthetician.
5. Massage. This one may seem silly and many of you may live with people who give great neck/back/foot massages but, really, there is nothing like having a massage on a real massage table by a person who has been trained in some form of massage therapy.
If you think you’d like to try one of these five indulgences or send someone you love to enjoy one of them, salons and day spas near you are sure to offer gift cards.
