Five Great Movie Sex Scenes

Heart pounding passion, nude bodies in motion, roving hands and searching lips:  all elements of a good movie sex scene.  Toss in a decent plot and compelling emotions and that sex scene becomes great.  So in honor of Valentine's Day, here in alphabetical order are five great movie sex scenes.

Body Heat (1981) - William Hurt, Kathleen Turner:  "You're not too smart, are you?  I like that in a man."  That's what Matty Walker says to Ned Racine right after meeting him in this modern day film noir.   Matty's an unhappily married woman with murder on her mind and Ned is a shady lawyer on the prowl during a Florida heat wave.  Their verbal foreplay leads to a scene where Ned follows Matty to her palatial house to see her collection of wind chimes.  Their mutual attraction crackles in the warm hot wind, but Matty asks Ned to leave because she knows she's "weak."

Ned walks out to his car and then changes his mind.  Too late, he tries the front door but it's locked.  Standing just inside is Matty staring at him wearing her bright red skirt, matching red lipstick and open necked white blouse.  Like a man possessed, Ned moves around the side of the house, trying any way he can to get in.  When he gets to a pair of French doors, he grabs a patio chair and sends it crashing through the glass.  Matty flinches in shock and passionate expectation as Ned strides over and grabs her.  Before long, Matty's on her back and the red skirt is no barrier to Ned.  "Please Ned, do it," she begs.  And he does.

Brokeback Mountain (2005) - Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal:  This movie is known as the cowboy love story because it's about two men who meet while working for a sheep rancher.

Jack and Ennis have sex for the first time in a tent on the mountain and man, is it something.  It's Jack who initiates the sexual encounter, and a resistant and startled Ennis soon succumbs.   It's startling because we're not used to seeing two men in a loving sex scene in the movies.  It's also startling because it's very hot and very sexy.  Just the sound of Jack unbuckling his pants is incredibly erotic and I have to admit all that denim, leather and cowboy sweat was enough to get me hot and bothered.  Ledger and Gyllenhaal  have great chemistry in the film and commit to the characters completely.   They make the sex and the love story believable and compelling.

How Stella Got Her Groove Back (1998) - Angela Bassett, Taye Diggs:  Stella's an executive on vacation in Jamaica, Winston's 20 years her junior and trying to find himself.  They meet and soon their vacation fling turns to love.  Now can I tell just you, between the gorgeous scenery and the blinding beauty of Taye Diggs and Angela Bassett, this movie is erotic without any sex at all.  So when there is sex, look out.

After Stella and Winston have an argument, Winston is
naked in the shower and Stella goes to him.  She opens the shower door and we're treated to a back view of Winston's strong, naked, muscular body.  Stella is wearing a short nightie but that doesn't stop her from getting under the shower and gently rubbing soap on Winston's back.  He breathes in the steam from the shower and Stella turns him toward her.  She tilts her head under the
water before kissing him.  They embrace and their kissing becomes more fervent.  The scene ends with them in bed, their arms locked around each other.

The Big Easy (1987) - Dennis Quaid, Ellen Barkin:  Set down in New Orleans, or the Big Easy as it's called, this is the story of a southern cop, Remy and a northern assistant district attorney, Anne, sent to investigate a murder and police corruption.  In the process these two do a sweltering Zydeco dance of the heart that ends up in the bedroom one night.

Remy is all southern charm with his "Cheres" and "Honeys" and Anne though reluctant at first becomes more than willing to be seduced.  What's great about this scene is we see almost no skin and it's the dialogue that fuels the passion.  While slow Zydeco plays in the background, Remy's smooth, predatory smile and whispered endearments have the two steaming up the windows in no time.

They end up on the bed, he without his shirt and she still wearing her prim

Hi Becca,

You've obviously been in some kind of cultural blackout and you must remedy that as quickly as possible.

Your very life depends on it!  ;-)

I am sad to say that I have not seen any of these movies.  I guess that I have some TV to watch some more movies.  I certainly have to check these movies out.

One of my favorites remains the long, slow scene in Bull Durham -- Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon dancing, bathing, him painting her toenails... 'scuse me, I need a drink.

Though I don't remember that scene in the movie, I love your description of it.  All I remember was how beautiful Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson were, and James Dean covered in oil.

Bound was amazing; loved that.

Still, on the subtler side (and on the much older movie side), I was always struck by the heat in the wedding scene in Giant. Leslie (Elizabeth Taylor), estranged and temporarily separated from her husband (Rock Hudson), is attendant at her sister's wedding and witnessing the vows. Unannounced and unexpected (and unseen by Leslie), Hudson comes into the scene standing somewhat behind her (as the vows are recited). After a few seconds, Leslie senses something; you see it in her face. She turns slightly, then starts to look behind her, but propriety requires her to keep facing the wedding pair. As the vows conclude (and the music swells), she finally gives in and turns around. Exchanging looks that express both relief and desire, they transcend the gap between them. She rushes to him, they embrace.

Sappy, I know. But seriously, it's hot.

Make friends with the facts.

Maybe it's because I don't like Mickey Rourke or Kim Basinger but "9 1/2 Weeks" never impressed me very much. Though it does have its erotic moments.

I have to mentione 91/2 weeks AGAIN here.  I saw that movie when I was a teenager, and me and all my girlfriends were all titillized by it - we weren't exactly sure why, but there was just 'something' about it that mesmerized us.

I saw that movie again last year for the first time since and wow, only NOW do I get that it's all about Dominance/submission.  What a daring movie for them to have made back in the eighties!  And I wish another would come along to enrapture women in the same way!

Brad Pitt and Julia Ormond in "Legends Of The Fall" was a steamy scene, and even better because it was forbidden.

One of my favorite kissing scenes is a very young Sean Connery with Tippi Hendren in Hitchcock's "Marnie."  They're in his office during a thunder storm and when Marnie gets frightened Sean needs to comfort her.

Oh those lips of his!

I considered Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in "North By Northwest," just the dialogue alone was very sexy.

And then of course "A Summer Place" with Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue was very risque for it's time.

I had to stop at five because I was getting a little too worked up....if you know what I mean! ;-D

But seriously, I forgot about "Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands," and though I saw "Mississippi Masala," I don't remember it well.  "9 1/2 Weeks" didn't do much for me.  But "The Thomas Crown Affair" with Renee Russo and Pierce Brosnan was quite the sexy romp!

I have to say, all of those are hot and steamy and are all my favorites...too bad Bogie and Bacall didn't actually have a sex scene in "To Have And Have Not" (1944), but I have to add a great many of Brad Pitt's sex scenes are phenomenal!

In particular, "Meet Joe Black" and "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"! YIKES!

When I told some friends about this post, a couple of them mentioned that "Top Gun" scene.

It's so funny what scenes people remember based on where they were in their lives when they saw them.

Um, so to speak.

I also love the less explicit scenes. Thought Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton generated a lot of heat with "Twister" and the only thing we saw were a few looks.

One of the best kissing scenes ever? "Another Time, Another Place ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051364 )," with a deliciously young Sean Connery and Lana Turner.

Amazing, I agree. Any other Roberto Rodriguez fans? Loved El Desperado w/Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. Also Chocolat with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche.

But it's interesting that a movie like She's Gotta Have It ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She%27s_Gotta_Have_It ) - which is one of my favorites, has one of, for me, the most memorable sex scenes - she's dating the guy who has to fold everything before he gets into bed - I think it's the model boyfriend, Greer. I forget which one he was - his name.  But all these years later, I still think about that scene and that guy and crack up.

or two to the mix, I can recommend the kiss between James Dean and Natalie Wood in Rebel Without a Cause as remarkable in the 50s because (gasp) mouths were open. And then there's the famous rolling on the beach between Bert Lancaster and Deborah Karr in From Here to Eternity. Back in those days you had no naked bodies, but you still got the idea. Just a raised eyebrow from Cary Grant was enough to tell the story.

There are so many movies with sensual and sexy scenes:  Love Jones, 9 1/2 Weeks, Mississippi Masala, Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, Thomas Crown Affair (both versions), Vickie, Christina Barcelona, etc.

Thanks for leading me down this thought path.

dudes in Judd Apatow's Knocked Up, dishing on their fave scenes.

Love it.

Tom Cruise's silhouetted kiss of Kelly McGillis in Top Gun was burned on my brain at a young age.   I also remember in high school really liking the video of Jason Priestley and Jennifer Connelly for Roy Orbison's I Drove All Night.  What thrills!

I remember yelling "OMG they're having actual lesbian sex!" in the movie theater. Instead of it being like fake porno lesbian sex, that is!

Later I found out that Susie Bright had been a consultant on the movie! That explained everything.  8-)

Oh, you need to get your hands on those two.  Especially "Body Heat."

Besides being very sexy, it's a good, solid thriller that co-stars a very youthful Ted Danson and in a turn that was supposed to signal his potential stardom, this year's Oscar nominee for "The Wrestler," Mickey Rourke.

Funny how those stardom predictions go.

Sad that I haven't seen the 2 from the 80's because I wans't allowed to- they were "Dirty."  Ahh Catholic Guilt.

I have to agree with Unfaithful. It was sensual and dirty raw and gritty (in a total good way) without feeling like a bad Cinemax movie.

Great list can't wait to see next weeks
