Five New Year's Eve Style Inspirations

Please don’t tell me that you are planning to spend another New Year’s Eve wrapped up under your blankets with your furry friend Snookums by your side. Between the economy, divisive elections, and national tragedies, there is no denying that 2012 was a super-difficult year (well, at least it was for me.) But we made it! How about we end this year and start the new one off right by celebrating our successes, perseverance, and resilience by getting up, getting out, and doing something?
Here are five New Year’s Eve style suggestions inspiration to help you ring in 2013 in fine fashion.
Celebrating Under the Stars
It’s no longer necessary for anyone to travel to New York City to stand with the thousands of other cold and shivering revelers to watch the ball drop in Times Square. Most cities now offer a comparable outdoor event for their residents.
A chic layered look like this one is a great option for a December outdoor event. The focus should be on keeping the core warm. For this I layered an undershirt, under a sheer, long-sleeved blouse, under a turtleneck sweater, under a faux fur vest for warmth and drama. This outfit works on a clear, mild night.
Celebrating With Friends and Family
My favorite way of ringing in the New Year is to attend an intimate house party hosted by a close friend or family member. All of the attendees are already familiar with each other, there is always good food, great music, and if we get too carried away with the toasts there is always a bed or couch to crash for the night.
I would choose a comfortable, but stylish, look for a house party. I am wearing an embellished, Peter Pan collar top from a discount chain, a second-hand, leather A-line skirt, and platform heels.
Celebrating at the Club
I grew out of my clubbing shoes a long time ago. The dance floor was always too packed, the music too loud, and the environment too ripe for all kinds of ratchetness. However,if this is still part of your lifestyle, in lieu of short, tight, and revealing I would go for something a little more sophisticated. Tru this oversized black and white vintage sequined top, with black leather, panel leggings. Edgy, knee-high boots with a sensible heel height anchor the look.
Celebrating at a Watch Night Service
I am from the Caribbean, where Watch Night Services were very big. When I was still under my Mom’s rule, I actually spent a couple of my New Year’s Eves reading scriptures, singing hymns, and “confessing,” so that I could receive the blessings that awaited me in the New Year. Your instinct is probably to roll out of your house at 11:30 p.m. in a frumpy getup, but I am really not big on the everyday casual look for church. I think that we should treat the sanctuary with respect and reverence, and that we should dress ourselves accordingly.
The little black dress is conservative, stylish, and appropriate for a Watch Night Service. I found this one for under $40 on the sales rack at my local department store. The little black dress is also versatile enough to take you from a fancy restaurant, to the sanctuary, to a fancy party after the service. Yes, people do that and I am one of them.
Celebrating at New Year's Eve Ball
Attending a who’s-who New Year’s Eve ball remains an unrealized dream for me. These fetes are usually super glamorous, but pricey. If I was attending this event, I would turn up the glamour by choosing a well-tailored, black and white strapless gown, like this one that I found in a thrift store. I added a statement necklace for extra drama, and a leather vest. The leather vest is unexpected, but as you see I like the idea of combining a sophisticated or luxurious piece with an edgy one. Adding the leather vest also gave me the opportunity to belt this dress, helping me to define my waist.
Wherever you go, whatever you wear, I hope you have a happy, and stylish, new year.
