Flavored Ice Cubes

Really Sarah, the first post after your hiatus is about ice cubes?  Okay I know,  a little unconventional, but stick with me on this one.

So the other night I had an Oprah sized “aha” moment. Maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but in my head there were Angels singing! Oh the things that give me joy :)

I was watching Giada De Laurentiis on the Food Network make a delicious Thai Iced Tea, (you’ll see this on the blog soon) and it looked great! After making and cooling the tea, she got out the ice cube tray, placed the ice in the glass before pouring in the tea…but wait, what’s wrong with that ice cube, is that a Thai Tea ice cube??? (insert Angels signing here) Brilliant! Keep the tea icy cold without watering it down. As the cube melts, it doesn’t change the consistency or flavor of the tea. Does it require a little planning in advace? Sure, but so worth it. Then I got to thinking, why not apply that to all iced beverages? Coffees, Teas, Punch, Lemonade, Horchata, Bloody Mary’s, Margaritas, Tonic Water, Club Soda, the possibilities are endless. Flavored ice cubes I’ve heard of, but matching the cube to your desired beverage was brand new information. I may be a little behind on this idea, but I’m not afraid to show my excitement!

I immediately logged onto Amazon and purchased these large silicone ice cube trays. I realized I haven’t had ice cube trays in my house in over 5 years. Sometimes you just forget when you have an automatic ice maker. I purchased the large trays because I think the bigger ice cubes look more elegant in a glass.  Nowadays you can buy an ice cube tray to make any size and shape cube you desire, which I think is so fun! I can’t wait for them to arrive and see all the ideas I can come up with. Summer Cocktails are calling my name!

So tell me, have you been doing this for years? Is this an “aha” moment for you? What kind of ice cubes are you thinking about making?

P.S. I have a sneaking suspicion that these trays are going to be used for more than just making ice in the near future. Stay tuned!
