Healthier Valentine's Day Treats for Class Parties

Many schools have started to implement wellness policies and no longer allow sweets to be shared at school.  While many people are in mourning over this decision, others rejoice.  After all, school IS a place for learning, which can be difficult to accomplish on a sugar high. ...more

Aren’t We Overreacting to our Poisonous Food Supply?

I mean, really.  Salmonella-roasted peanuts?  Vegetables full of E. coli.  Corn syrup leaking out of broken thermometers into our cereal?  Or something?  What’s the big deal?  The fact is, you’re 42 times more likely to be hit by a car on your way to the supermarket than to be poisoned by your groceries.  I mean 41 times.  Aaaaand now make that 38. ...more

Interested in starting a small business

I am interested in discovering the first step in starting a small business.  Can any of you entrepenuers out there give me a clue as to my first step?   It will be healty, sugar free dessert items, ideal for diabetics and those of us who simple can not tolerate or do not want to eat sugar or artificial substitues.  Does simply getting a small business license allow me to offer my food on-line or walk around to my local coffee shops (I'm in the Tacoma-Seattle area - lot's of coffee shops!) or do I need other "permits"?    Thanks for your help, cmclinton ...more

Time to Clean Out My Freezer

Yes, potential readers, this is the kind of content you can expect from me until my life becomes suddenly more exciting.  We’re going to talk about my freezer. A few years back, we got a freezer for the basement.  Our kitchen freezer had become woefully inadequate.  Over time, its function had been relegated to serving as the refrigerator’s dusty attic, so jam-packed full of castaway crap that I could never find what I was looking for.  So I’d just go out and buy more food.  And then inevitably find myself trying to cram that into the freezer, too.   ...more

Growing Tiny Gardens

I admit, I’m a budding gardener. And it is so exciting that the time to order seeds and plan this years garden is upon me! Last year I ran upon a great book, Animal, Vegatable, Miracle a little too late to start a full-fledged garden, but that didn’t stop me from getting a few seeds to germinate in my less-than-desirable soil. The tiny eggplants we grew were scrumptious– so much better than those store bought monsters. And that has incitd me to do better this year. ...more

Weekend Menu Planning: Time to Pick Your Chili Recipe for Superbowl Sunday

I'm not sure how chili became so linked with football, but for millions of Americans, it wouldn't be Superbowl Sunday without a big pot of chili on the stove. There's much less agreement about what goes into that pot of chili though, with as many variations of chili as there are cooks making it. Even if your usual chili is a recipe you're pretty fond of, I thought you might like to experiment with a new type of chili before this year's Superbowl on February 1. Who knows, one of these new variations of chili just might become your new favorite. ...more

Agave Nectar is Gaining a Lot of Fans; Have You Tried It Yet?

Even if you're not trying to watch your sugar intake, you've probably heard about agave nectar, also called agave syrup, a product that's now so mainstream you can find it in grocery stores. When I first wrote about agave nectar on BlogHer in 2007, I hadn't tried it yet, but had noticed it was definitely creating some buzz in the natural food world. Since then the popularity of agave has continued to rise. What is agave nectar and why are so many health-conscious cooks using it? ...more

Haven't tried that, but I bet it's good.
