I didn’t do much shopping this week as we were so well fed by our Denver friends who graciously shared their holiday with us. The real pumpkin pie got a thumbs up. One comment was “that’s the best pumpkin pie I’ve ever had.” Though when I made an apple pie at Thanksgiving and reminded my Dad that yes, he had had this pie before, and don’t worry he told me it was the best apple pie he’d ever had. First things first. Do not try and make a pumpkin pie with a Halloween pumpkin. Halloween pumpkins are bred specifically for carving – thick skin, hollow inside. Taste and consistency were not factors in the development of these varieties. Since it’s December, there’s probably little chance you would try this….but I thought I’d warn you just in case....more
Lots of things made me smile at the Denver Indoor Farmers Market this weekend. First were the tomatoes. I’ve said goodbye to tomatoes several times over the last few weeks, thinking I’d seen my last fresh local tomato until next summer. I never considered frozen tomatoes. The end of the year is for reflection. I like to take a look back at all the feminism & gender issues I covered for BlogHer. Since it's hard for me to remember what happened an hour ago, let alone in July or, heaven forbid, January, this is an important exercise for me. It reminds me what feminists accomplished, what still needs to be done, and what I'll can only laugh about or else I'll be curled up in the fetal position whimpering. This year, I sorted stories by topic.
Words you don’t want to hear from your taster after working eleven hours on a meal: “That’s going to be awesome. Tomorrow.” The meal was Cannellini beans with tomatoes, garlic, and sage. The taster was my husband.
