Food Bloggers Dish on Where to Eat in Chicago

When it comes to food, there are two distinctly different kinds of people. First there's the type that could go somewhere, like say the 2009 BlogHer Conference in Chicago, without giving much thought to what kind of food they'll be eating. Then there are people like me who are happy to spend hours reading about restaurants and searching out the best possible food experiences whenever they visit a new city. If you're a fellow food-thrill seeker, this post is for you.

If you're going to Chicago and are serious about finding good food, you probably already know you can get a head start on your food research with the BlogHer '09 Michelin Guide, which has Chicago restaurant recommendations from the Michelin staff. And of course, I've been serious about my food for a very long time, so when BlogHer was in Chicago two years ago, I wrote a long post filled with Chicago Restaurant Recommendations. When I check my 2007 list, I'm happy I'll be going back to Greek Islands (one of my favorite Chicago places) and I'm finally going to eat at Topolobampo.

But the Chicago food scene is constantly evolving, so I thought it would be fun to hear about more spots food bloggers are raving about these days. Just last month, Culinary Cory wrote about Favorite Chicago Restaurants. A number of his picks sound interesting, especially Cafe 28, a restaurant featuring Cuban-Mexican food that he picks for his number one choice. This post also has some great photos of Chicago landmarks.

In May 2009, Chew on That talked about Chicago Magazine's list of the Best New Chicago Restaurants, although with a warning that many of these new places are a bit on the spendy side for these tough economic times. If I was choosing from that list, I might go for Mexique, which offers "modern Mexican cuisine with a French influence." Another intriguing choice on this list is Sunda, where "new Asian cuisine" includes things like wasabi martinis.

At Serious Eats, Michael picks Chicago's Best Dining Experiences, starting with the uber-famous and equally expensive Alinea. (If you're not familiar with this destination restaurant, food lover LucyLou has an amazing comic strip about her visit to Alinea.) At the other end of the dining experience spectrum, Michael also loves Hot Doug's Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium. Now really, wouldn't the name alone make you want to go there at least once!

Chicago is famous for deep dish pizza, something you must try if you haven't had it. (I think of it as being like pizza turned into a casserole, just to give you a mental picture.) Slice can introduce you to Unos, Chicago's Original Deep Dish Pizza. If you're looking for a different type of pizza recommendation, Food Loves Writing has a definite pick for The Best Pizza in Chicago. And speaking of pizza, Passionate Eater weighs in on where to get the best pizza, Italian beef sandwiches, and hot dogs in a post about Where's the Best Chicago Beef? (I got hungry just looking at the photos on this blog.)

Still Can't Decide Where to Eat?
~ Chicago Foodies is an entire blog dedicated to talking about Chicago restaurants.
~ Also at Chicago Foodies, the Best Prix-Fixe option in Chicago.
~ Nick from The Paupered Chef goes to Chicago in search of the best Chicago dog and some genuine Mexican food and tells about it in Chicago Eats
~ Alice Q. Foodie visits Chicago and blogs about The Publican, the architecture, and eating hot dogs, with a lot of food recommendations and good photos thrown in.
~ We Are Not Martha does a Chicago Round-Up of restaurants they visited on a recent trip.
~ Susan from Fat Free Vegan Kitchen talks about where she ate in Chicago for BlogHer '07.

Do you have a favorite Chicago restaurant or somewhere you're looking forward to trying when you visit there? If so, please share with us in the comments.

Kalyn Denny also blogs at Kalyn's Kitchen, where her focus is on low-glycemic recipes using fresh ingredients. Kalyn looks forward to some good Chicago restaurant experiences, but her #1 food destination in Chicago is Penzeys.

If you are headed to the museum campus near "Field/Shedd/Planetarium, you'll be happy to know they have "healthy" choices at most of the booths there.

Veggie dogs Chicago-style are my fav! Enjoy!

Here's my $0.02:

India House
59 West Grand Ave
Chicago, IL 60610
(312) 645-9500

Two words: Lunch Buffet.

Coalfire Pizza
1321 W Grand Ave
Chicago, IL 60622
(312) 226-2625

Charred thin crust Pizza - traditional Neopolitan style. We only order the Margherita. It's beyond perfect.

de cero
814 W. Randolph Street
Chicago, IL 60607
(312) 455-8114

Love the small soft tacos! My favorite: skirt steak with potatoes, onion, cilantro, lime, and chipotle mayo. Battered shrimp is fabulous too.

Matchbox
770 North Milwaukee Ave
Chicago, Illinois 60622
(312) 666-9292

Though it's a bar and restaurant (inside a very cool train car, no less!) I've only had drinks here. The pineapple infused vodka gimlet is NOT to be missed.

Mixteco Grill
1601 W Montrose Ave
Chicago, IL 60613
(773) 868-1601

Fine Oaxacan from a Frontera Grill/Topolobampo alum. BYOB to boot.

There's many other fine places, of course. And given the conference's location, I'd be remiss if I didn't send anyone to Fox & Obel for breakfast or to find a selection of fine cheeses to take back home. Or Volare, my favorite downtown lunch spot. I can hardly pick between Bistro Zinc and Bistro Margot in Old Town, or Athena in Greektown. Oh, Chicago! How well you feed us!

Love the name, and it sounds like a great place!

Last time we were in Chicago visiting my BILs/SILs we had Sunday brunch at Yolk at 1120 South Michigan ( http://www.yoik-online.com ) and it was amazing! Bit of a wait, but worth every minute - really good, fresh food choices for breakfast and lunch. Generous portions - freshly squeezed oj and grapefruit juices, eggs benedict, omelettes, skillets, fritattas, crepes, pancakes, waffles, french toast, oatmeal, soups, sandwiches, salads and more. Lots of "Best Of" awards and now a second location at 747 North Wells ( http://www.yolk-online.com ). Sunday will be my birthday and I'm having brunch at Yolk!

That sounds fascinating. Sigh, so many restaurants, so little time.

I'm thinking I'll be going to the museum on Sunday, but I do remember what a great restaurant it was. My brother was a vegetarian most of the time he lived in Chicago, and he used to eat there about once a week.

iCream is in Wicker Park - the place where they make ice cream in test tubes and with liquid nitrogen.

It's fascinating.

It's yummy but it is indeed out there... or out here, since it's closer to my house than it is to the hotel. ;-)

Y'all should all get on the L and come to Evanston and try it. How about Sunday, when I'm back home. :-)

Home Run Inn Pizza.  THE abolute best thin crust for those chicagoans from the west side.  Delish!

I've been living in or near Chicago my entire life and recommend getting out of the downtown/loop area at least once for a meal. There are so many fantastic small restaurants throughout Chicago's diverse neighborhoods and eating at one is a great way to experience the city. There are great places in Chinatown (easy ride on the red line) or west in the trendy Bucktown/Wicker Park neighborhood (Hot Chocolate, Takashi, Piece) or go way north to Devon for Indian food. If you want to stay a bit closer then how about going to Old Town (home of Second City) - Twin Anchors for ribs is well-known and really tasty, but they don't take reservations.

I'll second two others mentioned before that are good if you want to stay close - Sunda and Greek Islands (love both, although they're very different from each other). For authentic Chicago, it's gotta be Lou Malnati's or Gino's East for pizza (much better than Uno's and don't even think about Giordano's) and Mr. Beef is great for a weeday lunch.

Okay, now I'm getting hungry. Enjoy Chicago!

I've heard it's lots of fun, but didn't know they had breakfast. Supposedly it's the place that inspired the "Pepsi, Pepsi, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger" skit on SNL.

It was breakfast and it was cheap and tasty! I couldn't remember the name but I knew I had to go down a flight of steps to get there.

Not for the health conscious but it was good stuff. Just saw the map, they have a location near the Navy Pier? I'll need the Pepto but I'll find my way.

But as I started writing, I realized how many of my old favorite places are either gone now (Como Inn, Gianotti's, Berghoff, Golden Ox) or are not what they used to be (Gene & Georgetti's, Superdawg). I will have to think on this topic and revisit it!

I will weigh in on some "landmark" Chicago foods and places first though:

Italian beef: Mr. Beef (666 N. Orleans) but by the very, very slightest of margins. Al's ( http://www.alsbeef.com/ ) is good, too - agree with aaustin13!

Hot dogs: The Sun-Times just did an article because July is hot dog month ( http://www.suntimes.com/entertainment/dining/16701...,WKP-News-brunoHotDog17.article ). Agreed with one of the author's top picks (Jimmy's Red Hots, 4000 W. Grand) and not the other (Superdawg ( http://www.superdawg.com/ )) which is sadly on my list of places I used to love. Price has skyrocketed and quality and service deteriorated to where for me it's not even worth the 5 minute trip (but long wait in line) from my house. Well, except to see the 50s style hot dog statues with the blinking eyes! Full disclosure: the owner of Jimmy's is a friend of my husband's, but I did know about it and like it long before we were married when I used to work in that area. Hot Doug's ( http://hotdougs.com/ ) is very innovative but a little too upscale for me. And one of the places mentioned many, many times in the comments of that article, Gene & Judes (2720 River Road, River Grove), is one of my favorites as well.

Pizza: Lou Malnati's ( http://www.loumalnatis.com/ ) is my personal fave for pan pizza. At work we usually order regular crust pizza from Rizzata ( http://www.rizzatas.com/ ) and it's really good, too.

Ethnic foods: I *love* Greek Islands ( http://www.greekislands.net/ ) and Kalyn's post has reminded me that it's been far, far too long since I've been there. This was a fave restaurant of my company's founder, now retired. If he had a lunch meeting there that I was not involved in, he would bring me back my fave lunch, pastichio. Chicago is a big enough city that you can probably find a good to excellent representative of just about every type of ethnic cuisine that you could want. I may have lived here too long because even though I know there are probably better places, my favorite for sushi is still the original Kamehachi ( http://www.kamehachi.com/locations/locations_oldto... ) (my favorite Japanese restaurant Matsuya is another long gone lamented place though).

Bad for you food: Chicago excels in this category. My pick would be Ricobene's ( http://www.ricobenesfamoussteaks.com/ ) Breaded Steak sandwiches. Breaded deep fried steak, with red sauce, cheese, onions, sweet and hot peppers, on Italian Bread.

Places that are cool but not necessarily because of the food: The original Billy Goat would fall in that category, but it also is such a big part of my memories of my first job downtown. I've never stepped foot in any of the other Billy Goats and I don't know that I ever will. Green Door Tavern ( http://greendoorchicago.com/ ) is another one. I've had great food and terrible food there, but it's a cool place because of its age (built right after the Chicago Fire and one of the only wood frame buildings still standing, it also survived a major area fire in 1989 that wiped out the art galleries in the lofts across it on Huron Street) and atmosphere and good beer selection.

Heh, maybe I don't have to revisit, I think I've said enough!

They were out of this world!  More mac and cheese than muffins but in the shape of muffins accompanied by a mayonaissy sauce.

Their menu describes it better than I can:

Mac & Cheese Muffins... 8

Elbow Mac baked into a cheesy mix of smoked Gouda and sharp cheddar and roasted garlic aioli

And though I didn't have it, I saw other people with the popcorn shrimp and they're served in a pink and white striped porcelain movie popcorn bucket. Cute!

I'm just sorry that night, I wasn't hungry enough to have dinner there.  Just drinks, appetizer and dessert.  I won't make that mistake again when I go back this week!

I was in Chicago a month ago for Blogging While Brown ( http://www.megansminute.com/blogging-while-brown/ )and went to the restaurant/sports bar Market ( http://marketbarchicago.com/gallery/1/the-restaura... ).  I loved it.

If you decide to go, have a mojito (the best I've ever had), the macaroni and cheese muffins (hmmmm!) and the chocolate chip and ice cream dessert (lovely!).

I'll be going back there.

Cheap, delicious, and quintessentially Chicago - http://www.alsbeef.com/

Also, the Billy Goat Tavern - Cheesehboiger! No coke, pepsi!  http://www.billygoattavern.com/home.html

I love Greek Islands, too.  OMG.  They have the best spinach/cheese pie.  Mmmm...

You must not leave Chicago without a Chicago style hot dog in your stomach.  Vienna Beef brand, poppy seed bun, Chicago style (wear a bib), NO KETCHUP!

Can't believe BlogHer is THIS WEEK!  SQUEEEEE!
