Food Bloggers Form "Operation Baking GALS" to Provide Treats for Soldiers in Iraq
by Kalyn Denny

It was barely over a week ago on the blog of famous baking expert Dorie Greenspan that I first heard about Operation Baking GALS, a project started by Susan Whetzel of Doughmesstic. I'm not a baker, so I didn't pay much attention to it at first.

Then in just a few short days, the words Operation Baking Gals started popping up in my feed reader so regularly that I realized I was witnessing the power of the internet being harnessed by a bunch of baking women. The acronym GALS stands for "Give A Little Support," and the project to recruit food bloggers to commit to baking treats once a month and mailing them to soldiers in Iraq was getting support all over the web. The movement now has an official Operation Baking Gals blog, where Susan shares how the idea got started.

That site is quickly becoming a source of information about mailing food items overseas and the latest post has mailing tips from a military wife. To say the least, Susan is Flabberghasted with the response she's received, (and she doesn't even care if she's spelled the word wrong.)

Soldiers enjoying Cookies

The first package arrived on August 2, and was greatly enjoyed, judging from the photo. The speedy baking was the work of Dianne from Dianne's Dishes, who sent peanut butter cookies, and shared the recipe (including a gluten-free version) when she wrote about Operation Baking GALS on her blog.

Maine is in the house!

I signed up! Contemplating a Whoopie Pie recipe that will travel well. If not, something else will have to do, but I'll be baking from Maine.

That's great!

It's such a nice project, and for me the idea that you can share about it on your blog makes it even more fun.
