This is a compensated review from BlogHer and Nubar.

I was sitting at lunch one day last month whining about what to hack for my next Beauty Hack column when my pal M said: why not write about this groovy nail polish I’ve been using? She held up her nicely manicured hand and waved her lovely coral-colored nails in my direction. The cool thing is, she continued, it's formaldehyde free!
I had a million questions for M: did the polish go on smoothly? Did it seem to withstand normal wear and tear? Did she know what diseases formaldehyde-containing nail polish cause? M had plenty of answers but I decided to check it out myself so I could report back to you, dear Beauty Hack readers.

Nubar nail products are “carcinogen free.” They do not contain formaldehyde (as previously stated) nor do they have toluene or phthalate in them. Do some googling to learn about the dangers of these chemicals and stay with me to rejoice in the lovely color ranges available from Nubar, who I emailed and received bottles of base coat, top coat and two funky colors from.

I am pleased to tell you that subtracting these “binding agents” and “lacquer preservers” doesn’t seem to have changed much in the application process of this polish – though I was very surprised to notice that it smells exactly like regular nail polish.  (Because, you know, I kind of thought that removing these compounds would somehow enhance the scent of the enamel – but NO!) But the odor, and it certainly is not long lasting, was the only downside.

Nubar Nail Lacquers paint on easily, wear as long as any other nail polish brand (use the topcoat for a longer lasting manicure) and are available in a stunning array of colors.
I even feel compelled to mention that the brush handle is especially comfortable to use and each bottle is competitively priced and easily available at their website.

So – here’s the thing: if you have the opportunity to use a product that is healthier for you, is readily available, is attractive and inexpensive, why not?

Nubar sent me a bottle of Reef Green and a bottle of  Peacock Feathers –

I loved them both, but they also have all the wonderful pink-ish French manicure colors so many of us like as well as dozens of classic shades AND some crazy funky neon brights and glittery wonders. At $7.49 a bottle, I’d highly recommend them.

I was always a devotee to Essie and OPI until one day I heard a woman talk about her allergic reactions of Formaldehyde. It was quite.. terrifying.

That day I went on a search for more natural options and I found. Butter 3 Free Nail Lacqure. It is a polish without the 3 harmful ingredients that are always found in nail polishes, formaldehyde included.

Once I started using Butter I was really excited, but that excitement lasted only as long as the color. It chipped within two days and the color within the bottle thickened so quickly.

I went back to Essie and OPI, but your suggestion sounds effective so I'm going to have to give that a go, hoping this time it would work.

I completely agree with you - if it's healthier for you then it's the obvious way to go. But isn't that so much the case now - the healthier and better something is for you the cheaper and more accessible it is?

As for a story idea - what would you pack to go on holidays or travel for work with you given the luggage weight restrictions? You essentials?

All the best,

Belinda :)
