Four old standbys
by blackbird

It's getting cold outside and I find myself turning to my cold-weather favorites to take care of my skin. And even though I've tried dozens of creams, lotions, body washes and lip balms I always come back to these four products. With the economy the way it is I'm pleased to report that none of them retails for more than ten dollars.

My first favorite is Carmex lip balm.

carmexI know it says it's for cold sores on the lid of that infamous white jar, and I'm sure it's intended and used for cold sores, but nothing makes my dry chapped lips feel better than Carmex. It's not waxy like some other balms, it stays on for hours and, call me crazy, but I like its slightly medicinal scent. It's $2.49!

Sadly, in cold weather, my hands and cuticles can get just as dry as my lips and year after year I turn to the same thing - my little white tube of Neutrogena hand cream. For $4.49 it only takes a tiny dab of this highly concentrated, unscented, non-greasy cream to keep my hands looking and feeling better. I've used it on my feet too (I'm adventurous that way) and have had equally good results. Neutrogena makes a few versions of this cream and I've tried each of them but this is the one I like best. neutrogena

Nivea cream is another of my moisturizing favorites. I use it year-round but I especially like to put it on my feet under socks in the winter. It's softly scented and I like it best in those tins they sell it in in some places. Available in a variety of other tubes, jars and bottles, Nivea creams and lotions are under ten dollars and sold in drugstores and supermarkets.

My last cold-weather favorite may surprise you...

Johnson'sWe haven't had a baby in the house in 13 years but I have always been devoted to Johnson's Baby Wash. I've never found anything gentler on my dry skin and use it a couple of times a week after we turn the heat on. Without it I get the cold-weather itchies and with it I can sniff its sweet baby smell and reminisce. Johnson's makes baby wash in lavender too. It sells for $4.49, makes a gentle lather and leaves me feeling pampered for pennies.

So, there you have it - four endorsements from me for the fall and winter. Order them at Drugstore.com or buy all four of them locally for less than twenty bucks and be prepared for lower temperatures.

I'm addicted to Carmex

I love Carmex too and have been using it for years. It's a damn site more expensive here too even with the Aussie dollar being dismal against the US one. It's about $6.50 here. Might try the hand cream suggestion though. My hands get really dry in winter.
