Four Simple Beauty Resolutions You'll Be Glad You Made

There is something so tempting about New Year's resolutions, isn't there?  Even those of who know better are lured into promising that we'll stop drinking! and start excercising! and call our mothers EVERY DAY!

Yeah, right.

This year, instead of vowing to completely reform everything about yourself and your life, resolve to make some very small changes.  Because while it might seem like the only resolutions that really count are the big ones, little tweaks to your routine can add up to big results overall.  We have four suggestions to keep you looking and feeling beautiful in the new year; none of them is particularly time consuming or expensive, but all of them will leave you looking -- and feeling -- more beautiful.

Clean out your makeup bag.  The New Year is a good time to take stock, but instead of cataloging your faults and failures, how about taking inventory of your lipsticks?  Get everything out and give it a good once over.  Anything that you're not wearing should go, either in the trash (if it's old and worn out) or in another bag (if it's Special Occasion makeup that you don't use every day).  What stays in your makeup bag?  Only the products that you use on a daily basis.  Total time: 30 minutes, tops.

Wear sunscreen.  Every single day, rain or shine.  This is the simplest thing you can do for your skin.  Make your sunscreen part of your morning routine; choose a moisturizer with SPF for one less step.  Keep in mind that a foundation with SPF probably isn't enough -- your foundation will rub off and migrate around during the day, leaving you exposed.  Total time: ten seconds each morning.

Wash your face.  By the end of the day, your face has sunscreen and makeup and bacteria all over it (mmm, nice).  Give your skin a break and get all that ick off before you go to sleep.  Use a liquid cleanser and cool water (I'm partial to Neutrogena's Fresh Foaming Cleanser, which has no scent and is gentle on my simultaneously oily AND dry skin),  or a makeup remover cloth (anyone have a brand they love?).  Unless you have very oily skin or are using topical anti-acne treatments, you really only need to wash your face at night.  So easy, but so worth while.  Total time: five minutes each evening.

Get a haircut.  It's easy to neglect your hair, especially in a bad economy (who doesn't need that extra cash?) or when you're super busy (who doesn't need that extra hour?) but taking the time to get a trim will make a huge difference in your look.  Ever notice how much easier it is to style your hair after a salon visit?  You'll save time in the day-to-day if you make time in the bigger picture.  Girls with short hair need a cut every four to six weeks; longer hair can go six to eight weeks before it's time for a trim.  Schedule appointments ahead of time and then block that window in your schedule.  Total time: one hour every two months.

What are YOUR beauty resolutions for 2009?  Or what do you need help with in the new year?  BeautyHacks is here for you -- share your own tips and tricks by writing a post, or ask us your most pressing beauty questions.  We know you have some, and we're here to answer them.

You are right on a few things.  The first one being that you should wear sunscreen each and every day even in the winter.  I think that a lot of us forget that we need to wear it in the winter too.  The second thing is getting a hair cut.  As a mother I find that I cut my hair less and less with each year that goes by.   It is a luzury in the budget and something that I often tell myself I do not NEED.  Now that my hair is starting to gray for the first time ever I am thinking more and more that it is something that I need to do.  I should make an appointment for next week!  Wish me luck and thanks for the motivation to get out there and do it!

I totally agree on the haircut front. In college I would get one haircut per year, cut short and allowed to grow out for the rest of the year. Now that I have an income, keeping up on my hair makes me feel SO MUCH BETTER about the way I look. It may even prevent me from buying new clothes...or not. We'll see.:)

I don't usually read Glamour, but I picked it up on a whim, and I agree -- that ten pushups a day thing was BRILLIANT.  And the article was dead on -- make small changes, just for short periods of time (the women in the article each made one small change for 30 days) and you'll see big results.

I'm totally doing pushups.  Starting right now.

I definitely agree about the haircuts. Sometimes I flinch, but how many times have I been feeling kind of schleppy, and then someone says "your hair looks great" and I realize that my whole look was saved by a good haircut!

Glamour magazine had an article ( http://www.glamour.com/health-fitness/2008/12/heal... ) about small changes this month also, I was inspired by the lady who did just 10 pushups a day after rolling out of bed. What a great way to just get in the right frame of mind, no specialy gear or gym membership required. She said she saw a tightening in her upper arms in just a week or so, and she was planning to move on to add a few sit-ups too!

Ditching old makeup is really essential.  Even if you want to wear a product that you've had for years, your skin will really thank you for not going there :)

Since there is no way I can do the wear everything challenge, I am going to get cruel with the beauty products.  Just because I spent $25 on a lipgloss, the fact I have only worn it once gives it a trip to the bin.  Yay for the encouragement!

@sassy - depends on your skin.  I was reading an amazing piece in In Style?  Lucky?  Some magazine about how Oil of Olay actually makes really good skin care products, many of them better than other brands that cost double, triple, etc as much.

Someone else will have better advice, I am sure.

I've been procrastinating on it for wayyy too long. As in long than a month.

I've just started using Oil of Olay's foaming facial clothes. I find them pretty nice. I do need to find a better moisturizer that has an SPF in it though. Anyone have suggestions?
