At times, it may a feel as if it would be easier to convince Rush Limbaugh to tango with Hillary Clinton than it is to convince your husband to attend church with you. Fortunately, it's not as difficult as it may seem. Getting your husband out of bed and into the pew is possible if you use the following tactics.
Let the Kids Do Your Dirty Work
Whereas many men will ignore your pleas to attend church, it is difficult for them to disregard the earnest plea of a child. "Our daughter was my secret weapon," says Alice Baker, a 42-year-old clerk. "She went to him one day and said, 'Daddy, will you come to church with us because I want you to go to Heaven too.' He looked at her and almost started crying. Since then, he has been in church every Sunday."
Use Peer Pressure
If you don't have any children, using your husband's friends can be just as effective. Peer pressure still works. "My husband did whatever his friends did whether it was going to bars, playing golf, or bowling," says Charlene Findley, 26. "Luckily, his friend, Bob, goes to our church and is quite active. One day, Bob invited Chris [her husband] to a Men's Retreat. Chris accepted because there was golf involved. I don't know what happed that weekend, but since then, Chris has been in church every Sunday more faithful than ever. I really have to thank God for Bob and golf."
Press Record
On any given Sunday, hoards of men can be found worshipping at the altar of football. Luckily TiVo and other digital recording devices have made it easy to record sports programs. "I promised my husband that I would record the games for him and let him watch them uninterrupted if he came to church with us," says Vickie McGrack, 38. "He was a little reluctant at first, but after watching a few games without any complaining from me, he learned to accept the compromise."
Leverage His Interests and Hobbies
Many churches have activities that appeal to men’s interests. Ida Davis, 45, used her husband's love of music to lure him into the fold. "There was an opening for a musician at our church and I encouraged him to audition. Well, they liked him and he started playing there every Sunday. Imagine my surprise when they held the altar call and my husband dropped his instrument and walked to the altar. My prayers had finally been answered. I guess God does work in mysterious ways."
