Like the Duggar Girls, I Was Assaulted. I Pretended to Be Asleep.

Sometimes it's easier to pretend that nothing happened than face the consequences. Victims of abuse often say that they pretended to be asleep in hopes that the abuser would stop. Unfortunately, that doesn't usually work. ...more

Haven't Blogged in Awhile...

So something positive that's happened since my breakup is I'm getting a LOT more sleep. No more waiting on my late-night goodnight calls, which always ended up being a litany of complaints from him...and looking at pictures lately, I'm starting to look happy again. I looked so stressed out and tired in my pictures during that relationship. And I lost so much weight. 116 is not good for someone 5'7" and in shape. I'm 123 now and look much better! I've still been doing my spin and have run a couple of 5Ks, which I plan to continue....more

I'm Still Proud of Baltimore Mom Controlling Rioting Son

I admit two things when I saw the video of this Baltimore mother who was angry that her son was involved in the rioting.  The first, is that I was cheering her on, because I was glad to see that at least one mother was taking responsibility for her child's actions.  Secondly, I was a little perturbed that she was repeatedly hitting him.  Still, some of the remarks on social media and blog posts regarding the instance hit a nerve with me....more

Dearest Readers

Dearest readers,Can we talk?I wanna tell you a secret. In my not-so-distant past, I've settled for less.I've journeyed the rugged, tar-black roads of lies about who I am.  Maybe you’ve traveled similar paths.  If so, you know the routes spewing filth and dust. The kind of dust that sticks to your skin like black tar, lingering for days, weeks, years. Whispering lies about who you are....more

Brenda Coffee@1010ParkPlacehttp://www.1010parkplace.comFueled by an endless supply of cocaine and vodka, my first husband fired a bullet through a closed door, into the room where I was standing. My response was immediate. Instinctual. No time to plan my jump from the second story window. I shoved it open and leapt into the night, hoping the tree outside would break my fall. ...more

#WomensLives: A reflection of my experience with domestic violence

the topic of domestic violence has been weaved throughout my life since i was a little girl. it was something drifting in the air, before i even knew what that something was – and even now, as a 31 year old woman i barely give it a thought to what a monumental thing that i’ve personally witnessed in regards to domestic violence....more

I Was Forced to Spend the Holidays with My Abuser

Someone told me the other day that this was "the season of goodwill to all men" and before I could leap in on the gender bias, he added, "...and that should include forgiveness".  We were talking about how I was anxious about Christmas, due to having to spend time in a house with the man who sexually abused me as a child....more

The Years I Lost, Then Found

None of us know the exact number of days we're granted when we're born. Most of us hope for a nice, long productive life. Unfortunately, time can be far too short. This fact was driven home for me on July 21, 2009. I've told the story time and time again, so I won't do it again (right now), but that day became pivotal in the way I viewed hindsight, foresight and my purpose....more

Narcissist vs Sociopath Personalities

Recently, I was reading the newspaper and came across Annie's Mailbox.  A reader had questioned about a family member possibly being a Sociopath.  I found the article fascinating, since I was under the belief that my recent ex is a Narcissist.  I decided to do some research to determine which he may be.  ...more
