I’m at the point in my writing where the fantasy and reality have intersected. This must happen to every writer, as we are all inspired by real life experiences. However, in trying to finish this book, I’ve been dealing with how much of my own life to reveal – and how much to keep secret. Do we, as writers, have a responsibility to our families and our friends as we reveal our perspective on things? I know that my life has been a fucking heartbreaking nightmare – why would I want to stir up things that I cannot change?Because I can’t be the only one....more
Having heard the latest uproar caused by Victoria's Secret's Bright Young Things lingerie line, I decided to check it out for myself. Many parents are outraged by what they see as a blatant attempt to market sexy lingerie and undies to their underage daughters.
The attached video from ABC News makes clear, by showing underwear models in close-up shots that give the impression you are viewing the perky derrieres of fourteen year old girls, this marketing campaign looks to be aimed at a young audience. Not that all of the Victoria’s Secret runway show are not prur...more
For the last couple of months, I’ve been helping out a friend by occasionally babysitting her four-year-old daughter, who was adopted from Ethiopia. My friend, who is white, is a single mother and a teacher and has made considerable efforts to make her daughter aware of her ethnicity, but I can’t help but fear for the trials and tribulations this little girl will endure when she gets older. She is a remarkably beautiful and sweet little kid, and I find myself treating her differently from how I treat my our-year-old niece and my nephews....more

Sex is such an awkward topic. I remember when I asked my mom where babies came from, I was about 8 years old. I guess her RN training kicked in because she broke out the books and pictures. I walked away from the whole thing shell shocked, certain being a mom would never be in my future. It was also confusing, because of the secrets I was already burdened with carrying. Fast forward to adulthood. With so much shame about my body and sex growing up it was difficult to consider how to broach the topic with our kids....more
In the US, girls are supposed to be sexy, but not sexual. In Norway, girls are expected to be both sexy and sexual — the problem is when they're horny. A "horny girl" is still very much taboo; obscene, too much. Even in so-called gender democratic and sexually liberated Norway....more
Most parents would rather see the dentist than to even think about talking to their kids about sex. Many of us put off having “The conversation” so long that our kids are left to learn about their bodies from what they’re picking up from TV, movies, video games and their friends. This is not exactly the most accurate information and can lead to lots of confusion, questions and heartache....more
I was quite the tomboy growing up – who am I kidding? My shoes vary between Crocs, Birkenstocks and Blunstones – I’m still a tomboy. This was partially due to the fact that Manolo Blahniks don’t exactly come in triple wide; but that’s OK because I have always preferred comfort first and foremost. I was an uber athelete – almost every sport came naturally to me, except for maybe running, but I even did that too. Some may have found it surprising, since I didn’t exactly have the body of your typical athlete, but there I was, kicking ass in everything I played....more
Little Lolitas are in the news again. Or rather, society’s sexualized images of young girls are in the news again. A recent report by the Parents Television Council warns us that the objectification of young women in the media must be stopped; that girls’ self-esteem, body image, and sexuality will be deeply harmed because of this oppression. While I couldn’t agree more, I wonder, is this really new news?
