How Audio Books Can Help You Get Things Done

I used to think listening to audio books was somehow cheating, not giving the written words the full, undivided attention they deserve. Until I read The Little Guide to Your Well-Read Life by Steve Leveen, founder of Levenger.Prior to reading this little book, I had checked a few audiobooks out from the library and occasionally listened to them while driving, but still felt that the books I listened to somehow didn't "count" as much as the ones I sat down and cleared uninterrupted time for. After reading through Leveen's tips for getting more reading into our lives, I had a new perspective, and was convinced that books listened to have the same weight and merit as books read visually.Audio Books & ProductivityEven just a few years ago audio books weren't as accessible as they are today. With apps like Audible and Overdrive and the prevalence of smartphones, audio books are more accessible and versatile than ever. Even if you don't have a smartphone, with Overdrive, you can easily listen to library audio books through your computer. When there is something to do that I don't particularly want to do, like ironing, yard work, washing the dog, and sometimes preparing dinner, I often psych myself up for the task with the thought that I get to listen to my current audio book. One of the best things about audio books is that they allow you to multitask on things that don't take too much thought....more

To Read or Not To Read: Audio Books Keep Me Sane

A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to read more, but my busy schedule (work, family, life) would only allow me a few precious moments in the wee hours of the night to sit down with a book of my choice.  Needless to say it took only minutes before my head began to bob and weave like a prize fighter or one of those dorky bobble head dolls.  This would go on night after night until finally, I gave up on reading....more

A Recording Session With A Real Wolfman

In 2006, I began the work of promoting a novel I’d written called, “Havasu Means Blue Water”. My publishing consultant warned me I had my work cutout. I’d written a book of literary fiction about a dying southwestern town, steeped in a history of violence and racial bigotry. Although the book is peopled with characters that are complex and intriguing, and, even downright evil—a good read doesn’t always make it to the top shelf of a bookrack. The sobering truth is many good books can be picked up for pennies from bookstore bargain bins all over the United States....more

West with the Night

It always amazes me how a song can take you back to a particular time and place so immediately, even within the first verse. I hear a particular song and I am transported back to the break up with my first love, the year I started college, or a really joyous moment or event. For me, one audio book has the same connection and feelings tied to it. It was as if it was one long song, and seeing the cover, the title, or anything about it takes me back to 1998 and my move from Atlanta, Georgia to San Francisco. ...more

For the Love of Audio

Cheeky Girl Loves Audio Books! I admit I devour books like candy, but never thought I would enjoy having someone else – anyone other than the voices in my head that is – bring the characters to life for me. With an hour or so car commute each way to work, I decided to give audio books a try and I discovered a prefect way to pass the time and get some "quality" time in with my feisty girlfriends and those hot leading men! ...more
