Crunchy Autumn Chicken Salad

On Autumn

Fall in Park City is brief. Unpredictable. We have a dozen hot days and then one morning it’s freezing and we can’t remember how the furnace works. Next we have six or eight cold days and then it hits 85 and we all get sunburnt. Dressing ourselves is a struggle. On the first day of fall we ceremoniously parade out our fleece jackets and our knit sweaters, giddy about the soups and stews we’re going to make....more

Falling Leaves in Cumberland

Last week I travelled to my hometown of Cumberland, Maryland to visit my brother's grave on the first anniversary of his passing. While the day was overcast and chilly, the autumn leaves brought enormous warmth to everything around them, and somehow helped to lighten the somber mood of the trip. I have no doubt that a day or two later most of those same leaves fell from their trees, and are now currently turning a dingy shade of brown on the ground....more

The Wide Open Country that I Love

I’ve been thinking about Cole Porter all day.  Porter was born in Peru, Indiana, in a wealthy family. His father was a druggist and his mother heir to a fortune from her businessman father.  Porter showed an early affinity for music and left Indiana for boarding school in Massachusetts and attended college at Yale....more

Why I Don't Like Fall.

Everywhere is the colors of fall, the sound of people sipping pumpkin spice latte's, and over it all hangs the cloying scent of pecan-pie candles. I mean, c'mon, people! Don't you know that 'fall' is just another word for 'almost-winter'?!  I realize the temperatures are wonderful after a long, sweaty summer, but fact is, fall is so temperamental, you can't even enjoy it! You get up to a freezing cold house, so you crank up the furnace and layer all the orange and brown clothes you own, trying to catch that Pinteresty-cool fall style....more

5 Simple Steps to "Fall Cleaning" Your Mind

For me, fall always feels more like a season of renewal than even New Year's does. And seeing that autumn is the new "hip" time of year, I'm apparently not alone on that stance. Who can say why the past decade or so has generated a sudden manic appreciation for pumpkins, but I'm not going to snub my nose at it. ...more

The 20 List: Fall Bucket List

October is here, so it’s time for me to create a Fall bucket list of things to do on my own and with my children. I like 20 as a goal, a nice round number and averaged with November that gives me 10 things to do each month. Just enough not to be overwhelmed but add some fun to the usual routine of life. 1) Make a Homemade Apple Pie. I am 41 years old and have never made a homemade apple pie. So this year, I am going to be brave enough to try it, including the crust, which I have heard is the hard part. ...more

Forget Pumpkin Spice Lattes! 8 Real Reasons Girls Love Fall

Load up the jeep, uncover the convertible, and pick out a cute cover-up, because it’s summer and we’re headed to the beach! Hooray! But, come mid-August, with over a month of summer left, girls everywhere are quietly aching for autumn. We start pinning boots and long sweaters, and we may even sneak a light scarf into our late summer outfits....more
