My husband likes to say that our youngest, Leelou, can speak parseltongue, like in the Harry Potter books, because in her ongoing effort to learn to talk, she sometimes grins mischievously (like Jack Nicholson in The Shining, if I tell the truth), and produces a series of noises that sound kind of like, "spspsp...adohomin...spspsp."
After years of tossing and turning on the hard and poke-y springs of the old, uncomfortable, instrument of torture that was my far past its prime bed, I finally have something new in my life.
King-sized, pillow-topped, heaven-in-a-mattress.
This miracle in sleep technology is not so much a bed as it is a floating island of somnolent comfort. In it, I don't so much sleep as slumber in cozy, lazy, blissful repose.
Raised beds are a wonderful use of land. Maybe you only have a small backyard and you want to grow fifteen pounds of tomatoes. Perhaps you have poorly draining soil. Or maybe you just do not like weeds in your garden. A raised bed can help you do all of this....more
We only have one dog so the title is a bit misleading, but sometimes it feels like there is more than one. The dog - a 45 pound short haired whippet looking mix - curls up under the blankets right where my legs should be.I put my legs around him. I put my legs over him. I slide one leg under him and the other behind him. He doesn't mind.I mind, but I feel bad for him otherwise and I want him to feel like he's part of the family....more
an unhacked kura I managed to keep Micah in his crib for more than 3 years. Technically, since he started with it at 11 months, maybe it's more like 2 and a half years. But whatever: a really long time. Happily, mind you. We went to Baja, he slept in beds there, peacefully content, returned home and dove blissfully right back into his crib with nary a negative twinge. He's an interesting kid, that one....more
My son is obsessed with climbing up on our bed. It takes him a bit, because it's a king-sized bed that sits a bit higher off the ground, but he gets there eventually. Zane stands up once he has climbed his version of Mt. Everest, and never fails to throw both arms in the air in victory. And then he jumps. ...more
I seem to be going on and on about hair, but it is such an important aspect of our appearance and, I think, a reflection of how we feel. So, here are just a few more tips and comments about hair that I think are important in the grand scheme of keeping our hair – and ourselves – looking young.
1.No razor cut around the ears, no ears cut out period. We need hair around the face to soften our overall appearance. The hair around the face should also be feathered or ‘wispy’ and uneven, rather than hacked off in a straight line....more
Again, if you have come to this party via Part 1 of this post (Why I Will Be Staying In Bed on 14th February - Part 1), I don’t mean staying in bed in the out of breath, sweaty, oh-my-God-Yes-YES sort of way.To recap. The question posed in Part One was:"Do you have a day on your calendar which should be full of joy but, for whatever reason, never seems to quite live up to your expectations? A day you have come to realise maybe you should just stay in bed?” Saint Valentine’s Day is that day for me. After nearly forty odd years (very odd years), I am waving my white handkerchief in surrender and officially declaring myself persona non grata where Saint Valentine is concerned."Now that we’re all caught up, let’s continue. My plight is made worse because I am a lover of French movies, subtitles and all - especially French love story movies. I still feel, therefore, it should not have come to this. However, come to this it has and, not ordinarily a quitter, I now recount the last three experiences which have brought me to this point....more
