About Those Things You're Not Supposed To Say To Writers

Yesterday, there was a hashtag running wild on Twitter. I follow a lot of professional writers, so I saw a lot of tweets carrying the tag: #TenThingsNotToSayToAWriter. They were mostly funny, but some of them made me cringe. And one or two of them shot me right through the heart. For example: ...more

Your 2025 Blogging Time Capsule

Have you ever considered what your last blog post will be? Just recently while sailing on a transatlantic ship during the night, while the waves were pounding the boat and we rocked back and forth in our beds, the question on my mind was this: If we were to sink, my very last blog post would be about waiting in LaGuardia airport, using the $7 a day internet. It would be a final snapshot. But really, is that what I want to go out with? Paid internet? No. Definitely not. ...more

Women inspired

Emma Palova on inspirationAs an author, screenwriter, journalist and a blogger, I write a lot. I write daily for myself to keep me in balance and I write for others. I write for information, I write for joy and to entertain. And now, that I am working on the Greenwich Meridian (c) memoir about the family immigration saga, I also write for the family, the friends and the friends of friends. The memoir was actually the reason why I started blogging to have an online presence.Once, I was supposed to send my clips to an editor of a regional Midwest magazine."Do they want you to bring those clips on a semi-truck?" laughed my husband Ludek."Yes, but now I do pixels so they might have to increase their memory," I said. Most often, people ask me the question, "What inspires you?"The answer is simple, it is the world around me as I look deeper into it. I keep discovering new things in nature, in the sky and in the society around me.I always ask myself questions, "Why does that flower look different in the morning than in the evening?"Is it just my perception of it? Is that the difference between how I felt in the morning and how I feel in the evening? Is it the difference between fresh and tired? It should still be the same flower. But, it isn't. Everything around that lace hydrangea has changed since 8 a.m. The flower has grown bolder with deeper pinkish hues of the blossoms bowing in the sunset. What caused that change? Was it the heat or the pounding rain?Who's favorite flower is that hydrangea? Well, of course. It's my friend Valerie's favorite flower. Oh, and I gave her a bouquet of hydrangeas for her birthday in 2000....more
