There are 45,000 Signatures on my Petition on Change.Org to get a Brand to stop using Images of Malnourished Models

I was sitting in my office (the bathroom) flipping through the latest Vanity Fair  feeling annoyed that Julia Roberts is on the cover with legs as long as the Great Wall of China sitting on the steel-hewn lap of that aphrodisiacal Idris Elba (she's my new Gwyneth Paltrow object of jealousy) when I flipped to this ad campaign for Saint Laurent Paris....more

Do I Really Need A Better Butt?

I stood in the grocery last week, and it was difficult not to notice that four different magazines were featuring articles about a woman’s buttocks. In one magazine, there were pictures of different shaped buttocks and you were asked to identify the shape of your butt. To be honest, I wasn’t sure, as I usually don’t twist my head around like Jim Carrey does in The Mask or Linda Blair in The Exorcist. For most of my life, my butt has sat fairly quietly on the top of my legs and has been of great use when it comes to walking, running, and climbing stairs. It was actually one of the few body parts I was unlikely to fret over. ...more

Thank you Tina Fey!

Tina Fey needs to be on Everygirl's - and EveryMom's - short list as a role model. Not just because she is enormously hard working and talented, but in our body-image obsessed culture, she allowed herself to be photographed at Disney World with her daughter wearing a swimming suit. A perfectly perfect, fun but mom--ish, tankini. In polka-dot. And she looks lovely!...more

Armpits for August - fuzzy logic

I have decided to give Armpits4August, a campaign to get women to gorw their armpit hair out for August to promote acceptence of our bodies as well as raise awareness and funds for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a go and it has spurred me on to thinking about body hair and self image, and of course low self esteem and self hatred, all courtesy of beauty standards all of which are intertwined into a big shit sandwich....more

Can We Stop Using the Word Tramp?

TRAMP. Whether using the word as an epithet or embracing it (a.k.a., The Tramp Stamp), the word incites an emotional reaction in all of us. Because what we are really saying is that a girl or a woman is only the sum of her ....body parts. Calling another human being "a tramp" puts a label on that person. And, if we are asking parents not to dress their children like tramps, aren't we really saying...Parents, don't dress your girls like them? Perhaps the bigger question is: Can we stop using the word TRAMP? Are we capable of having this conversation without the labels? ...more
