Father's Day and Jerry Sandusky

Father's Day is not a fun one for me.  As some of you know, my father is a child molester and I was one of his victims.  I know I am not alone in experiencing mixed emotions during Father's Day and some have different reasons than my own.  However, there are some great dads out there and they deserve to be honored.  If you are one of those dads, and you know who are even if you did not receive a new drill or tie, Happy Father's Day.  Keep up the good work.  Your kids need you....more

It's Okay to Let Your Baby Cry

She just wouldn't. stop. crying. I walked her. I bounced her. I shushed her. She cried. I offered the breast. The pacifier. A bottle. My finger tip. She wailed. I changed her diaper. I changed her clothes. I gently washed her face and burped her. She shrieked. I begged. I pleaded. I wept. She screamed. For hours, this went on. My breasts engorged, ached, and flooded my shirt with milk she wouldn't drink. Tears streamed down my face while my heart raced and my blood pressure rose....more

11 Children Removed From Texas Home: Who Is to Blame?

How well do you know your neighbors? Would you know if seven separate families lived in one home? Would you know if they tied their children to beds during naptime? Would you be totally caught off guard if 11 children were removed by Child Protective Services from a home on your street? It happened in Dayton, Texas, and neighbors were surprised. ...more

Two Writing Prompts, a Bridge, and the Truth

Every Thursday I look forward to Mama Kat's Pretty Much World Famous Writer's Workshop meme..  She gives great prompts and the list of bloggers that link up is extensive which means a lot of good reading.  I have been contemplating this week’s prompts since Monday when they were posted.   I’ve had a few days to envision, imagine, muse, and choose a prompt to create something for this post.  And yet, I am stuck—not for lack of ideas but ...more

Letting Go of Fear

Even though it is the middle of winter and there haven't been any feathers for weeks, Mandy brought a baby white feather home with her today and gave it to me with a kiss. I knew it was an important day when I got a feather message. ...more

D.O.A.

I can handle the abusive drunks. I can handle the tweekers who are “talkin’ to the devil.” I can handle the annoying drug seekers who are being seen for their weekly “dental pain” fix. But what I can’t seem to handle are the “walk in the door with my dead baby” parents....more

Are Fat Kids' Parents Guilty of Child Abuse?

I was a little shocked to learn that a Cleveland, Ohio 3rd grader was removed from his parents' custody because he is obese. Granted, I need to lose weight, and perhaps that influences my opinion -- but it wasn't intuitive to me that having a fat kid is child abuse. By the way, I am using the term fat intentionally. It is all well and good to soften a message with politically correct terms -- but there are some topics that I think deserve the impact that the harsher words bring to the table....more
