Death By Fire Truck Questions

One of my boys asks a lot of questions. A LOT of questions. Often he spread them out and asks them of other people -- his siblings, his dad, his friends and teachers. I don't mind answering questions -- truly, I don't, for how else will he learn? But, sometimes, my patience is shattered. ...more

Childhood Obesity: Sending Our Kids to an Early Grave

The United States is one of the most obese countries in the world. This became very clear to me once I lived outside of the country. When I first arrived in South Africa I was on the plump side -- not obese, but certainly overweight. As an ex-pat, my way of eating changed tremendously. Why I Hate Back-to-School: A Rant

I just returned from dropping off enrollment forms at my daughter's kindergarten. For the second time since early enrollment in May. Apparently, they're afraid we might have moved in two months and thus shouldn't be eligible to attend my girl's public school. And this leads me into my rant about schools in this country. ...more

Coping With Children Who Are Energy Vampires

“If people around you aren’t going anywhere, if their dreams are no bigger than hanging out on the corner, or if they’re dragging you down, get rid of them,” said Magic Johnson. “Negative people can sap your energy so fast, and they can take your dreams from you, too.” ...more
