When Bad Things Happen to Good People... A Post for Marcus

Now I know there are some people that probably think I'm bat bleep crazy for posting about a football player, but y'all, I live in South Carolina, and the one thing that binds us all (well, many of us!) together and drives us all apart down here is our love for college football! ...more

Why Does It All Come Down to Football?

I know what you guys are thinking. Here's another woman complaining about losing her significant other to football. NOPE. I love football. When I first met my ex-fiance, who shall now be referred to as "Jex," He told me I'd be a football widow when UT played. I said no way, buddy, I'll be going with you, even if I went to Tech. Now, I never was interested in Tech and didn't even like the school much. Changing to a more interesting team seemed like a good idea. It was. I got so into it I was more Longhorn than Jex. Last game, I think I teared up a bit because it was ending....more

BCS: Change Your System NOW!

Did you watch the BCS “Championship” game between LSU and Alabama?  Or, did you fall asleep in the middle of it from sheer boredom, like I did?  From anybody’s perspective (except, maybe, those myopic folks in the SEC), the game was a yawner.  The “experts” (mostly those who are somehow beholden to the BCS…or naturally, ESPN!) called it a “defensive battle” but I stand by my assertion: it was a major bore....more

“Suck For Luck”…Well, It Sucks

Have you heard of this?  Some NFL teams are supposedly losing games on purpose so they can have first crack at Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, the consensus Number 1 pick in next spring’s draft.  I hate everything about this – the expression, the theory and especially the idea that any professional team could actually set out to intentionally lose a game.  As the theory took root on sports broadcasts across the country, it had me wondering just how easy it would be to lose a game on purpose.  I’ve never been a competitive athlete but I raised one and watched him compet...more

The Only Rivalry that Matters: It’s UCLA vs. USC on Saturday!

Those who know me know that I'm a Trojan.  I've been one my entire life.  So, nothing gets me more excited than the Clash of the Crosstowns, otherwise known as the Big Game, the annual gridiron match between the USC Trojans and the UCLA Bruins.  This annual game determines who "owns" the city for the next year and which team can lord it over the other for the next 364 days.  It decides which coach gets the better football recruits.  It determines who gets to take possession of the Victory Bell....more

College Football Without USC is Just Plain Boring

It’s another Saturday afternoon, there’s college football everywhere and yet the day is grim and dull.  Why?  I’ll tell you why.  It’s because the USC Trojans don’t factor into the post-season.  (Full disclosure: I am a Trojan fan and have been a dedicated Trojan fan for many years.)  The football program is in the second year of a two-year post-season ban, which means they aren’t part of any screwball BCS rankings and they can’t play in a bowl game.  But, what this also means is that the Trojans are nobody’s evil menace; they aren’t fodder for national analyst...more

My First Time...As A College Football Fan

Feeling a little retro today, thinking about being a fan when I was a kid.For all the parents (and future parents) out there looking forward to taking their kids to their first football game, here is some sound advice and a hilarious account of one writer's trip to the Columbia-Harvard game with his four-year-old daughter....more

Dude of the Week: Patrick Witt

The NCAA is a hot mess lately, wrought with conference realignments, pay-for-play scandals, and, oh yeah, alleged child sex abuse cover-ups....more

Eco-Friendly Tailgating

Fall and football are still in the air. This year even tailgaters are going green and I don’t mean the school colors. With more awareness of environmentalism, it’s good to remind everyone to leave no trace and do it green from start to finish....more
