Break Out of the Pizza Box

Recently a friend said to me with frustration in her voice: “Where is it written, that pizza and cake is what we should serve our kids at a birthday party?” Considering the fact that was the menu at the last kid’s birthday party I hosted, I had to search hard for an appropriate response. And, mentioning that in addition to the cake I offered an optional cupcake followed by a goody bag with candy, was not the way to go. I felt guilty. I know the difference between healthy and unhealthy food. “Why don’t my actions always reflect that?” I wondered....more

Loud Yogurt

Not too long ago I bought a bag of frozen strawberries for no good reason.  I guess they looked lonely sitting in the freezer section at Trader Joe’s, so I picked them up and introduced them to the other unnecessary items in my cart like almonds covered in dark chocolate, sea salt, and turbinado sugar.  Oh my God were those things good…  The chocolate covered almonds, not the strawberries....more

Momma's Mess Hall

My grandmother had seven children. Her mother had eleven. I am convinced that had I not been as careful as I was, I'd have twelve now myself. But back to my grandmother. She had seven children. Consequently, she had to care for those seven children. When I was young, I was put on meatball duty at her house. Frequently. This is a form of slavery wherein one is forced, against one's will, to roll several pounds' worth of meatballs, both regular-sized and tiny ones for soup, before one could continue outside to play....more
