The Halloween Overachiever

I don't know when it started. I guess it's possible that she may have always been this way—even as far back as inside the womb. I am referring to my daughter's need to be the best at whatever she does. When it comes to Halloween, it's no different. She pushes it to the limit—or at least to my limit—always needing to have the most original costume possible. This means that it can't be purchased straight off the shelf, and since I don't sew, I can't make it in the traditional sense....more
Great costumes! I can't wait to find out what she decided to be this year!more

So Its getting close to when i should start my kids Halloween costumes. Last year i made their costumes. Mind you i did NOT use a pattern so they were not perfect , I am one of the people in the world that does not understand how to use a pattern so everything I make I just kind of wing it and see where it takes me.                                                                       ...more

My Son is Gay

If you think that me allowing my son to be a female character for Halloween is somehow going to ‘make’ him gay, then you are an idiot. Firstly, what a ridiculous concept. Secondly, if my son is gay, OK. I will love him no less. Thirdly, I am not worried that your son will grow up to be an actual ninja so back off. If my daughter had dressed as Batman, no one would have thought twice about it. No one....more

My Unmonsterish Halloween - Day 96 of ONE GOOD DEED

Geez, remember how far in advance you got Halloween costumes when you were little? How many times you tried it on (store bought or handmade) beforehand? And then, the biggest worry of all: Would your parents make you wear a sweater over it? So here was my promise to myself today: to comment on the costume of every kid I saw. I’d already had some practice about six weeks ago, when a little girl came into the store in a Supergirl costume, shiny red skirt and all....more

Listening to the Season

I'll wander away from Halloween in a moment now, after just a few more pictures to show you how much fun we had here in Taos. The crowds of kids always come out in the early afternoon, leaving the evening for the grownups to go out and play. We were out early, and back home for dinner, but I still donned my fabulous hat and my bonehead necklace. Heidi was a very popular little bee, and wanted nothing more than to snuggle with us on the couch last night. Those adoring kids wore her out....more

Halloween Schmoozing

We had 3 different parties this year, plus trick or treating today. Different locations, same awkwardness from being in a room full of people I either didn't know or didn't know well. Not bad, though, once I found my niche, which tends to happen towards the end of the party. ...more

It's time for ghost and goblins, princesses and fairies, vampires and Batman alike to take to the streets -- preferrably with reflective tape on the back of their costumes -- in hopes of receiving candy. Halloween is right around the corner, and we want to see what ghouls are lurking at your house! ...more

Divorce: a Halloween Horror Tale

I love Halloween. When my kids were younger, one of the thrills of living right off Caledonia Street in Sausalito, California, was that you were at Ground Zero for the town's trick or treat chicanery. The evening would start with a parade of li'l ghosts, goblins and costumes-du-jour, a costume judging contest, and then a promenade through the grid of streets that flank Caledonia Street before snaking up into the hills of Sausalito's weather-blessed banana belt....more
