I Hope You Didn't Think You Were a Person or Anything

Credit card companies have been told to stop issuing cards to people who do not pull in an income. On its face, this ruling seems to make sense. People who don't make any money shouldn't have the responsibility of having to pay credit card companies back for their consumption needs. Behind that face, however, the issue is so much deeper. Behind that face are women and men who stay home to take care of their kids while their spouses work, providing the more disposable income....more

How did I get here? -- Filing for bankruptcy

As anyone who is facing bankruptcy asks:  How did I get here? It's fairly easy for me to see the chain of events that lead to here.It started in college, which credit cards equaled money. I knew better, but I'd never tasted the punishment of it. I figured it wouldn't be that big of a deal. I got out of college, and found all my paychecks going to pay back my debts. I'd gotten myself in deep enough that no one would even give me a consolidation loan to make it easier for me to dig my way out. ...more

Ice cream dates were out the window. Eating steaks was also out the window (poor Josh). Lunch? That's what you make each night and pack into a bag so you can take it to work with you. Not in a fancy, cool lunchbox (unless you already have one), but in one of those plastic bags from the grocery store. And you reuse the plastic bag every day until it has jelly smeared down the side of it (cause you're packing PB&J -- or its equivalent -- every day). Our food budget was $40 a week, combined, for the majority of those 3 years. ...more

The Other Side of the Fence (Life After Bankruptcy)

I think that it’s a big thing that I can say that Jessie and I never fight about money.  When things are tight and we are stressed about how we are going to make our money stretch, we are able to sit and talk it out without fighting about it.  This is a part of my marriage that makes me very proud. Oh, it wasn’t always like that.  We had to do a trial by fire to learn how to calm the hell down where money was concerned.  We learned young, and we learned hard....more

Your Credit Card was Just Canceled. Now What?

At first she thought the problem was that pesky magnetic stripe. She knew she had plenty of credit available on her card, she always paid her bills on time, and she usually paid more than the minimum payment due. When that card didn't work, Jennifer* simply used her other card. No worries. The second time it happened she went online to double check her card balance. The online statement showed when Jennifer had made her last payment, and it indicated her card was not only active but there was plenty of available credit. ...more
