I have seriously crafty friends. My pals Cathie and Steve just came out with a jewelry line called Jewel Pop Shop. Cathie is one of our very own BlogHer bloggers! My other friend (and past BlogHer DIY Editor) Kathy Cano-Murillo recently launched a new product line through her brand The Crafty Chica. Kathy specializes in Day of the Dead imagery, so a Dia de Los Muertos-themed Jewel Pop Shop necklace seemed perfect!
Last week was Dia de las Muertos. This is centuries old holiday which originated in in Mexico and is currently enjoying a surge in popularity. The holiday honors loved ones who have died. Growing up Catholic, November 1st meant All Souls Day, although I don't really remember anything in particular happening at school other than going to church. My sister, 16 years my senior, has more vivid memories and perhaps things had changed some before I entered parochial school. In recent years I've heard a lot more about the celebrations around Day of the Dead, which sounds like a much more fun way of honoring the deceased.
