Civil Discord, Oxford-Style Debate: Why I Heart "Intelligence Squared"

When I was a geeky teenager back in the early 1970s, one of my favorite television shows was a short-lived PBS series called The Advocates, in which well-informed, but ideologically opposed debaters argued over the issues of the day. That was back when people could disagree without impugning each other's patriotism, intelligence or character....more

Health Care Reform Crib Sheet For Busy People Part 2

I  got a letter from my insurance company telling me that they will decide if a medication is valid, not my doctor. The insurance company will decide on the dosage, the length of time I can and can't have the medication and whether I take a prerequisite medication before I can be receive that my doctor wants me to have. Jenna Jameson...The nanny debate...and childhood bullies

I was reading the TMZ comment section under photos of Jenna Jameson and her babies. People were posting such horrible comments about Jenna AND her babies. WTF? Most of the comments had to do with Jenna's kids being teased when they get older. How about THIS... how about we teach children that teasing and making fun of others is WRONG?!?! How about parents do their job and teach their children the way to treat others? ...more

Art and Anxiety

Do your children make you happier?

This is a question that I have long considered, especially as I've gotten older. Now, I work with kids, and I find that quite enjoyable. However, I have always maintained that kids are great... as long as you can give them back. Being a parent has never been anywhere near the top of my to-do list, even though I am increasingly surrounded by family and friends who are having children of their own. When I tell people that I'm not really interested in having kids, they inevitably tell me that I'll change my mind when I hit the magic Three-Oh. ...more

An Amazing Debate. . .

Thursday night I spent the evening at my friend Luis(aka Kat) house.  And for the first time actually spent extended amount of time with her husband, Tony.  Their relationship is a very unique one, and one I hope others see and attempt to emulate. Luis is pagan, like myself, but Tony, on the other hand, is an evangelical Christian.  Yet it is their differences that make them work.  He really and truly respects Luis and her beliefs, even if he can't share them and she does the same. ...more
