10 Signs You've Watched 'Frozen' Too Many Times

The other day my ten-year-old son went into the bathroom he shares with his sister and shut the door. I presume he had to take care of some business. Moments later, his little sister, age seven, came looking for him. She noticed the closed door, knocked on it, and sang, “Do you want to build a snowman?” ...more

What's so bad about the Princesses?

I Have a Princess Issue

When I first learned that Miss was a girl, I was so excited. I had all sorts of thoughts about being a mom to a little girl. Things I wanted to teach her and show her. I remember some family members teasing that she would be "such a princess" and having a yucky gut reaction to that statement....more

Brave and Other Princessy Qualities

Thank you Pixar, thank you, thank you, thank you for finally introducing us to a real princess. A flawed, sometimes selfish, prideful tomboy of a girl in Brave. She sounds like a real prize, I know, but being a Disney movie, the princess in question, Merida, learns a lesson and it's a good one. It certainly translates to real life a little easier than, say, Cinderella or Snow White ("be really sweet and kind, girls, and your prince, or at least his footman, will come and sweep you away!). ...more

The Problem with Princesses

Disney has done us no favors, folks.  This morning I roused my sleepy 5 year-old out of bed and carried her into the living room to watch the Royal Wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.  I thought she would be delighted to see a common girl become a princess in real life before her very eyes. I was wrong.  She watched in awe at first, but before I knew it, she was on the ground kicking and crying.  It was a fit of tumultuous jealousy and pure rage....more

Disney says “Bye” to Fairy Tales, so what now?

I woke up this morning to this article “Disney Animation is closing the book on fairy tales“. I just want to say everything in this post is my opinion and interpretation of this. I read the article and these are the two things that really stood out to me:...more

It's the End of the Disney Princess Fairy Tale, But It Ain't Happily Ever After

Once upon a time, in a magical land with more or less excellent public transportation, lived a woman on a ground floor apartment facing the street. One day as her practically-clad feet glided down the sidewalk, she stopped to marvel at an advertisement in a bus shelter. The ad depicted what she thought was a very mean-looking cartoon female sneering through a mass of yellow-blond hair with a handsome cartoon guy at her side. It seemed that the ad was for the newest Disney Princess Spectacular Extravaganza Event Designed to Make Girls Everywhere Squeal and Beg for Toys and Princess Costumes, Tangled. The woman then learned from the LA Times that Disney is ending the Princess Spectacular Extravaganza Event Designed to Make Girls Everywhere Squeal and Beg for Toys and Princess Costumes era. ...more
