it's done!

I finally, finally, finished up my t-shirt quilt over the weekend.  Talk about a project!  This was the most difficulty I had completing a sewing project ever.  I knew I wanted to finish it though, only five years or so after I started it.  You can read my other posts about it here and here. I chose to do random line quilting, nothing very dense, just to keep things together. So glad it's all done now, my favorite blanket ...more

Quilting Miss Noel

I will not even pretend to be good at machine quilting. I am trying to learn to do it better because I am so impressed when I see it done well. One person that I really look up to is Wendy Sheppard from the lovely blog Ivory Spring. Her quilting is 100% swoon worthy. I found this article about quilting appliqué blocks that I thought I would give a try for Miss Noel. Here are some shots of how ...more

Tutorial: A Frameful of Flowers

I love flowers. I love my sewing room. Flowers on my sewing room table would be a bad idea, considering the amount of fabric and supplies that's taking over my table at any given time. I created this piece of art for my sewing room, and can't wait to make another larger piece for my living room, with the flowers spaced a bit further apart and in purple. Something about a frame bursting with voluptuous flowers is just heavenly . ...more

Tomato harvest fun

Tomato harvest fun We did not miss the tomato harvest in our backyard and I am so happy about that! I have picked many many bowls full of cherry tomatoes, the funky shaped heirlooms are just ripening and the regular I can’t remember what kind of tomatoes are juuust getting ready to ripen. So far I have made and canned a tomato confit and a lovely tomato conserve. Vim has made a lacto-fermented ketchup and plans on doing a ...more

Collecting on the Cheap

Are you a collector? Does your heart go pitter patter at the sight of red transferware dishes or monogrammed silverplate or milk glass? In fact, my heart goes pitter patter at the sight of all of those things. :) But I am also a cheap collector -- it's not just the thrill of the hunt, but also the idea of finding a bargain that appeals to me. And so, I also have to admit that some of the most ...more

I finally found my voice

The final installment of the Modern Quilt Guild's Project Modern Challenge, to find your own voice, has been the most difficult to me. I have entered each of the three earlier challenges, and amazingly enough was chosen a winner in both the first and second, so I really wanted to enter the last one as well. But with the only guideline being to create a quilt that is all me, I was a little intimidated, to tell you the ...more

Color Theory In Your Wardrobe

During my first year of design school, I was introduced to the concept of color theory. And it totally rocked my world. Before I had taken this class, with a sharp and delightful Aussie instructor, I was totally unaware of the science of color. Ever since, I’ve been a color evangelist. This theory, which many of us learned in design school, can be easily applied to dressing oneself. If you’re tired of putting together bland, safe-beige outfits, it’s time ...more

Shall it be blue, blue or blue?

As anyone who is a little home design obsessed like me can understand, I didn't quite shake the mental obsession I have with painting the shore bedroom a deep blue color. So what is a girl to do with this on her mind? Swatches of course! (If you need a refresher, check out my crazy about navy, blue'd away, what the shore bedroom looks like now and how I heart my goldfish.)I ran to the local hardware store and ...more
