Better Sleep and Other Health Predictions for 2014

This past year was filled with health highs and lows -- from Michelle Obama reminding us about that simple idea of drinking more water to the whooping cough outbreak in Texas. We're looking ahead to see what will be hot this upcoming year in regards to your health. ...more

DNA, Genetics and Half-Siblings are all we have to put the Puzzle Pieces together!

Finding half-siblings for my kids has been very important for me, in truth it is why I started blogging, in almost every post I would put our donors number (BGM 9581 by the way) and it is why I joined the DSR (Donor Sibling Registry) before my first was even born.  I feel I have been lucky enough to find two half-sibs. One on the DSR, and one because of my blog....more

Dog DNA Test: Our Beagle-Hound Is a Poodle

When I finally caved and agreed TW and Elly could have a dog for their birthday last year what it really meant was they could have a dog that I liked as much, if not more, than they did and I have a thing for beagles. So while I might have agreed to another dog, (and I would have), I was leaning heavily toward something that was "beagle-like" -- and that's how we ended up with Skeeter Bess....more

DNA Evidence Can't Prove Guilt

I have to watch murder mysteries alone so that my muttering doesn't disrupt the enjoyment of others. I'm willing to overlook that science procedures take place at an incredible speed in fancy surroundings - I mean, how boring would it be to watch actual PCR? - but I hate the implication that a DNA match means guilty....more

What Makes Us Different

As I have mentioned before, Birdie and Princess are identical twins.  Recently, Birdie has really been fixated on and fascinated by the fact that her sister is called her "identical twin", and yet there are many differences between them.  Being very literal in speech, every time this comes up, Birdie is really bugged by the discrepancy....more

My Unscientific Theories about Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

Last weekend when I logged onto Facebook, I found waiting for me a message from my husband's uncle.  After reading my blog, he did some research and found the same things I learned a few years ago-- that doctors and scientists have plenty of theories but aren't really sure what causes autism and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).  He asked me a question that I feel is worth addressing here, because I have wrestled with it often....more

Ashton Kutcher Versus the Village Voice: Why Numbers and Language Matter in Social Causes

Last week closed with a violent feud between the Village Voice and Ashton Kutcher, who has joined the ranks of celebrity philanthropists. The Voice, which has been under attack for continuing to allow users to post ads advertising adult services, pointed out in their cover story last week that the numbers Kutcher uses to rally support for his foundation are grossly exaggerated, leading the star to retaliate by contacting its advertisers on Twitter accusing the publication of being a "Digital Brothel." It got ugly, but the Voice raised a good point. Here's a closer look. ...more

Maury Povich: DNA Does Not a Parent Make

“I need to prove he’s the dad so he’ll help me with the baby.” The girl sobbed to Maury. The guy who accompanied her to the show was positive he wasn’t, screaming sexual slurs at his former lover. Where did we get the idea that a paternity test will change our ex-sex partners, magically transforming them into loving partners and fathers? The Maury Povich show is predicated on humiliating women. Why else would they allow these “lovers” to use such vile verbal attacks? The producers and Maury have the power to stop the humiliation. They don’t....more
