Review of America the Beautiful documentary and Contest to win a Limited Edition DVD of the film

One of the first questions Darryl Roberts asks in his documentary America the Beautiful is “Who benefits from women not feeling beautiful?” As the film spends the next 105 minutes trying to find the answers to that question, you witness the full impact of our obsession with beauty through tales of girls with eating disorders, plastic surgeries gone wrong, and the whirlwind modeling career of Gerren Taylor who did her first runway shows at the age of 12. ...more

A Series of Unfortunate Events: A Tale of Surviving Adversity

So Much More Than a Mom recently wrote about the events that lead to her breakdown. That got me to thinking about my own little breakdown. Cyndi's climaxed after a 2-year series of unfortunate events; mine climaxed after 8 14 years of unfortunate events. I *should* password-protect this post so that it doesn't end up being screen-shot or quoted on someone else's blog, but I'm tired of letting CAB hinder me. ...more

Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls

I just got back from Blogher 09 and I'm exhausted. It's a good kind of exhaustion, the one that comes from too much fun and too much time in a car (roadtrip!). BlogHer 09 wasn't all fun and frivolity though. One of the best sessions I attended dealt with some very serious issues. It was the Blogs and Body Image Room of Your Own session. It is going to stick with me for a long time. On the (really long) drive home I decided it was finally time to read Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls. ...more

So, for “The Queen” to turn her back on her own people, it’s serious people. Serious- as in-seriously aggravating as hell. Why do we continue to think that the next diet is going to be “The One”? ...more

Bulimia More Common Among Black Girls: Gossip Girl Got it Wrong

So we may be wrong about bulimia.  A new study suggests our stereotype of the binge and purge addicted teen, as most recently exemplified by waspy Blair Waldorf on this season's Gossip Girl, may need to be revised.  Rich white teenagers may be at lower risk than a lot of other girls according to a recent study... ...more

Yogini Ana Brett Replies to Body Image Discussion

Earlier this week, I wrote a review of Ana Brett and Ravi Singh's newest Kundalini Yoga DVDs.  Little did I know that it would lead to an intense discussion of body image. Ana Brett had gone from brunette to blond recently, and this touched a nerve.  But what really seemed to bother people was how little she wears on these DVDs. So I followed up with a post, If You're Happy and You Know it, Show Your Thighs.  I knew this was a good opportunity to talk frankly about how we feel about our bodies, using Ana as a mirror to face this particular set of demons. ...more
