Things that have been on my mind and I swear on Imelda Marcos's bouffant I will write about. Here. On this blog. Maybe even today.
Every year, I look forward to the Emmys until I see that the nominated writers are overwhelmingly White and male. I ranted a bit on Twitter about this and then I wondered if I'm jeopardizing my own aspiring tv writer ass by doing so. I then got slightly depressed when I remembered that I'm in my 30's, in not great health, and also so risk-averse it's almost paralyzing. Seriously — who's still an aspiring thing in their 30's? I feel pathetic and small and petty.
What better way to spend an evening, than watching a TV awards show while chattering away with friends? Well that's what a group of BlogHer CEs and I did last night during the 61st annual Emmy Awards. Big winners were "Mad Men," "30 Rock," Glenn Close and Bryan Cranston, but what was the show like? Well, my fellow CEs and I Chattered live throughout the show and I'm here to let you in on the conversation.
First I'll give you the good news. Because this year the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences decided to open up the top Emmy categories to six nominations instead of five, several deserving nominees sneaked in when they might otherwise have been overlooked.
The bad news, several of my favorites were passed over in favor of nominees that I consider extremely questionable.
A total of 22 nominations went to 30 Rock and Mad Men got the most drama nominations with 16.
Television's biggest night had drama, pathos, and naked people on the stage...well, maybe not naked people on the stage, but I got your attention didn't I?
Last night was the 2008 Emmy Awards and since I never believe in watching the show in real time, I use Megan's Patented DVR Shortcut Method. How it works is I start watching the recorded show about an hour and a half before the live show ends, then I try to click through fast enough to finish watching the DVR version just as the live show ends.
That way, you watch three hours worth of inane speeches and bad hosting jokes in an hour and a half. It's a better viewing value. On with the show.
It's still a month and a half to the primetime Emmy Awards, and I'm wondering what the nominees might be up to.
I'm sure all the actors and actresses are being inundated with offers of clothes and jewelry from every well known and some not so well known designers.
I'll be interested to see what some of my favorite nominees will be wearing: Glenn Close, Ted Danson and Zeljko Ivanek of "Damages;" America Ferrera and
Vanessa Williams of "Ugly Betty;" Neil Patrick Harris of "How I Met Your
Mother" and Hugh Laurie of "House."
