Emotions as Weather

Although most people in the country wouldn’t agree, we in Southern California have been having extreme weather conditions for us: rain and mudslides. You could almost say we’re so used to mild conditions that we become afraid of what others would call “real” weather—weather wimps....more

What is natural?

The other day I saw an ad on a bus shelter that said something along the lines of:"Nature takes on wrinkles. Nature wins."I immediately found the statement jarring. There's a bit of a conflict there for me because wrinkles are natural. This sort of advertising works really well and I know why. We are hardwired to reject 'natural' things about our bodies. This stems from our desire to avoid discomfort....more

I locked myself in the bathroom and cried….

I’ve written before about how tough I can find it to keep Poppet still and happy for 4 1/2 hours at a time (even though it is just once a week). The other day I hit my breaking point. She had done so well for the first 2 hours of services, and on the hour-long break she was full of energy and really tired. Put her down, screaming, pick her up, screaming, try to nurse her, screaming, try to cuddle, screaming….....more

Expressing our feelings can be the hardest thing to do for some of us. We look for validation from others that we are here and we are heard. Annual at the OB/GYN

I had my annual check-up at the OB/GYN.  How fabulous to be reminded that I have HPV, as probably attained from my husband. I believe this diagnosis only came up a year or so ago.  I again asked my doctor how long HPV can remain dormant.  She didn't really have an answer. I was with my husband for almost 20 years....could it remain dormant that long?!  I am 99.9% sure that he never cheated, but I admit that a few questions percolate in my brain. ...more

Anger: Cleansing Squall or Hurricane?

Anger is the emotional energy within each of us that rises up when something needs to change. If you act on the need to create change, your anger can be channeled effectively; but it’s not redirected to something effective, your frustration will build, sometimes to hurricane force.  Anger that is allowed to get out of control is as destructive as a hurricane, but anger that is expressed in healthy wa...more
