We Are People, Not Paychecks

As someone who has battled severe clinical depression for a number of years, I have visited many mental health professionals.  Lately it dawned on me that only one of those professionals treated me with genuine respect and compassion.  I believe that most qualified therapists are truly caring individuals who want the best for their clients.  However, there are just as many that are unethical and insensitive in their approach.  In some cases, it is clear that they are only in it for the financial gain, not because there is a true desire to help others. ...more

Autism and Empathy

We've been noticing something recently. Rachel really loves her brothers, Simon in particular. She has always been sensitive to his feelings and they have always demonstrated what I call a "twin bond" -- they only have to glance at each other and they seem to have a full detailed conversation. We have never been able to scold Simon in front of her, not because of the noise, but because it meant her brother was in trouble....more

Showing a Little Humility (AKA: I Like You More if You Blush)

A few years ago I was in a nice restaurant and forgot to cover my mouth when I laughed (I didn't want to show my teeth because the glue on my braces had badly discolored and my teeth looked stained since they were covered with the glue), and the waiter thought it was sweet that I blushed. I told him my temporary "glue" situation was mortifying to me even though I'm a reasonably confident person. It wasn't a blunder as such but he told me not to blush and that I looked "fabulous"!  Bless his heart!...more

Why I stopped Watching the News

Bad News I used to watch the news on TV. Then, I moved on to reading the news online. And then I stopped altogether. I listen to Minnesota Public Radio for local breaking news. I check for weather updates. I see bits and pieces and links to news in tweets. And I read The Week magazine back to front for news from around the world. ...more

Why I Write

My husband asked me yesterday: "What is the goal for your writing?  What do you want readers to experience when reading your words?"  I thought about it for a moment.  It wasn't like I haven't thought about it before but it's something that's personal and hard to verbalize.  But I did so anyways.  I told him: "I want people to feel loved."Here's a story I wrote for The Red Dress Club that hopefully echoes this sentiment. Abner...more
