I ran out of kids and had to find more

They left me, the little sweeties.  Never mind that I loved 'em, wiped 'em, sewed for 'em, worried over 'em and went to all their plays, recitals, concerts and horse shows.  They had the audacity to grow up and move on.  Fiddlesticks.  What's a career mom to do?  Find more, that's what.  Didn't take long and I was a card carrying, T-shirt wearing, dues paying member of the Sea Scouts.   ...more

A Humbling Experience

As I attempted to make medical appointments for myself this morning,"Excuse me, I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you just said," I stumbled over and over again as I found myself asking the appointment schedulers to repeat themselves, and when they did, I realized each was confirming the information about me already on their computer screen. Am I no longer capable of understanding familiar speech?...more

Menopause Brain

Today I have a severe case of menopause brain.  It's empty.  Completely empty. I've caught myself a few times today wandering around a room with no clue why I even entered it in the first place.  I did manage to get the trash taken out before the garbage truck actually got here so I have accomplished one thing today!...more
Thank you, ladies!  I'm a bit more coherent today...oh wait...it was just a hot flash.more

You Make Me Feel Like Dancing: March Madness Edition

I was raised on a steady diet of college basketball. More specifically, UCLA Bruin Basketball.  No big stretch- my parents met over 60 years ago while my mother was a student at UCLA. It was easy being a fan in the John Wooden years- 10 National Championships, long undefeated streaks, a roster of future NBA Hall of Famers. Coach Wooden retired in 1975, ostensibly when Bill Walton graduated....more

Show and Tell

Brittany called the house phone the other day and since I had been talking to her on my cell phone just a few minutes earlier I asked if she was trying to reach her dad.   She said, “No, I was just playing Parental Lottery!” As usual she was walking between classes. And also as usual she was holding multiple conversations and getting me in the middle of them. I think half the kids at Western have said “Hi Mom” to me!Brittany has always used me for show and tell. Maybe that’s why I like writing about her – pay back!...more

A Short Christmas Visit

Who Are You?

The new year has always been a time for introspection and reflection.  A time to turn inwards and figure out where you want to go and what you want to change for the new year.  So who are you?  Deep down, at your core...what is the one word you would use to describe yourself?...more

Blue Christmas

I made it to the finish line.  All the gifts are completed, wrapped, and shipped.  And then my complete Christmas came completely unraveled. My youngest son is leaving Tuesday to take a job on the other side of the state.  Now, in most states, this wouldn't be a big deal.  But this is Texas which means he will be 9 1/2 hours away.  Not a trip that can be taken on a whim or even a weekend.  I won't see him for months....more
