Once, I convinced my parents' landlady to replace the ancient fridge in the apartment with a new, EnergyStar-rated fridge. We contributed half the purchase price and within a single year, we got our contribution back in electricity savings. (That old fridge was a real dinosaur).You could do worse than to include a home energy audit as one of your new year resolutions.  Whether you do it yourself or call in an expert, you will probably come out saving energy costs.  Read more >

I stopped making New Year's resolutions about six or seven years ago. Instead of looking forward and making plans, I started instead to look back at the months already fading away in life's rear-view mirror and name three things I did well—or even just well enough. This way, I start the year with a pat on the back, not a kick in the ass. (Life itself is pretty good at doling out those kicks without assistance from me, thank you very much.)  Read more >

When our kids were small we bought our first home, a 1256 square ft house in the middle of town, neighbors were within an arms reach.  With that small house there was an exceptionally small mortgage. Our family of five was bursting the seams of that little house, we longed for privacy from our neighbors, rooms for each child. A home that would accomodate our extended family during holidays and so we sold the little house, bought property on the outskirts of town and built the house where we currently dwell.   Read more >
