When Childhood Icons Die

When hearing of Kurt Cobain's untimely, but not surprising, suicide 1n 1994, my initial reaction wasn't grief or shock, but fear that this would be one of those"defining moments" of my generation. Like the Baby Boomers before us had Elvis and John Lennon, two iconic figures whose lives were cut short, I had that first taste "Wow, life's short." But a suicide, while sad and tragic, is only a blip on the radar screen of life, and we expect out idols to live at least long enough to experience that awesome comeback tour. The ones that don't took Neil Young's advice a little too seriously. ...more

Ditching the Diary...

Is it obvious that I am virgin to this world of blogging. Do you all start out with a brief introduction as if in a ANON meeting, "Hi, my name is Jessica", "Hello Jessica". To me, it feels as so, but this is my first stab at admitantly entering this world of blogging, which once upon a time, when I was 13 unknowingly I started doing a website that was basically an online journal, hashing out my angst or my frustration. ...more

Paris Hilton Sucks

~The beautiful people" are beginning to make me ill. When Katie Holmes's haircut makes national news and Paris Hilton's jail time is more significant than Darfur, it makes me angry as hell. Are these people [media] really serious? As a nation, are we truly so indifferent and uninterested with our own lives that Katie's new hair-doo gives us enjoyment, pleasure, some sort of fulfillment? What are we trying to fill? What is lacking in our existence? Ask yourselves this question, pleeeeease.   Excuuuuuse me... but have you heard there's a little war going on in Iraq? ...more

Travel Writers, A Tough Crowd to Please

First, an admission: I missed Confessions of a Travel Writer. I failed to set my DVR and went out to hang with a handful of travel bloggers instead. As it stands, today, I have no opinion about the show. But man, oh man, other people do and it looks like the majority of viewers within the wired travel crowd HATED the show's host, Charles Runnette. HATED him. ...more

The Academy Awards Try To Make Up For "The Dark Knight"

It took Batman to bring the Academy to its knees.  Next year the 82nd annual Academy Awards will have ten Best Picture Nominees.  You know whose fault that is?  Batman's.  Or rather last year's Batman movie, "The Dark Knight," starring Christian Bale and Academy Award winner Heath Ledger.  Because Academy voters weren't hip enough to nominate the very worthy "Dark Knight" for Best Picture instead of say that hideously overrated "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," the Academy's gone off the deep cinematic end and decided to have ten Best Picture nominees next year.  ...more

It's true, the Academy doesn't run out and actively find the good films and nominate them.  A ...more
