Breaking the Rules

I stepped out of the grocery store and watched a sporty black car zip down the parking aisle the wrong way. I could feel my neck tense in anger and irritation. The nerve of that car. What is wrong with the driver? Then the black car stopped, paused, and backed into the parking space. My irritation rose.I continued to my car, stashed my groceries, and headed home, all the while thinking about the situation. Why was I so angry? The answer that popped into my head: The driver broke the rules....more

Long, Lovely Letter

One memory from my childhood was watching my mom sit at the kitchen table with a pen and stack of lined loose-leaf sheets of paper to write one of her three sisters a long letter, handwritten in attractive Arabic script. This was one of the only activities that could draw mom away from her rigorous daily routine of managing every family affair and caring for three daughters with boundless dedication. Taking the time to write letters was a rare respite for our supermom....more

'Motivation: where are you?'

I am aware of it, but it still surprises me how relative is motivation to mood. For the past couple of days I have let myself been driven by my mood swings and it has been quite an unproductive vicious circle I have found myself in. 3 Amazing Words

"I Love You". 8 letters with 2 spaces. It really sounds simple. But to a parent of a child with autism, it's elusive. So many of us never hear these words, even if our children are verbal. At least not with feeling and a true comprehension of the meaning behind them. We know our children love us. We see it in their eyes. We see it in their behavior. But knowing it is not the same as hearing it....more

Speak Your Truth: I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar

Earlier this week, I heard the news that Osama bin Laden had been assassinated. The very first thought that popped into my mind was, “Ding dong the witch is dead. Rejoice, munchkins!" Then a brief 10 seconds later, it was followed by a heaviness in my heart. Everyone all over the US was celebrating. Twitter was all atwitter with gleeful cheering. Facebook was one big PAR-TEE. There were parties in the streets. And yet, I found myself crying, not because the world isn’t better off without bin Laden in it, but because our reaction as a society breaks my heart....more

Sex and Censorship: What Recent Attacks on Online Sex Discussions Have to Do With Your Blog

Here's what is at stake: Recent censorship of online discussions of sex and pornography -- not the porn itself, but discussions -- isn't an issue of us versus them, morality versus indecency, conservatives versus liberals, believers versus atheists. This is a matter of freedom to speak, freedom to congregate, freedom to learn about ourselves and to share that knowledge. That's what this country stands for and it's essential that those of us who believe in these tenets take a stance against those seeking to oppress them. ...more
