Ok, I didn’t actually put my baby on a train. It was my 13-year-old and I didn’t leave him anywhere; I put him on a commuter train heading for the safety of camp in the northern suburbs of Chicago.
Still, as the train pulled away from the station, it sure felt like I placed my newborn on the train and let him go.
Deep dark parenting confession: I don't like other people's children.
Now now, let's not be hasty. There are plenty of great kids out there. I love some of my friends' kids almost as much as I love my own, and I've met a handful or three at the grocery store that seemed like pretty alright cats I could tolerate at a barbeque for like, a whole half an hour.
Deep dark parenting confession: I don't like parenting other people's children.
I'm talking about that time of day when it's nap time. It's that time of day when, while trying to hold my son captive for at least an hour, I end up as the one held in captivity as I pretend to nap myself just so he would slow down, lie down with me and close his eyes. 98% of the time, it's seriously a battle.
I just got schooled. I guess I had to be here, in this place. This place of banging my head against the wall trying to parent a wacko/pyro 7- almost 8-year-old. I will start with this admission: I am a total hypocrite. I used to preach no TV until the Roosters Came Home and the Cows Went to Bed. Honestly, I'll still preach that to you if your kid is 2 or 3. So if you want to hash it out, just tell me your 2-year-old sits in front of a TV, ever.

"That's IT! If you ______ one more time, you're going straight to TIME OUT! This is your last warning!" If I had a penny for every time I had to say this in my house, I'd be able to buy a vintage Chanel purse. Sure enough, less than five minutes later: "I just told you that it's not ok to do that!" So guess what I did. I put myself in time out. Yes, me. I put on an educational ANY TV show, and went to my closet....more
