The Great Pumpkin Will Rise!

Being Halloween week, I'm in freak out mode dealing with the Mouse's severe food allergies.  Most cannot relate, and believe me, I realize it could be worse, but man it sucks.  I'm dodging literal egg and peanut bullets around every corner and having to explain to my three young kids that they cannot have that piece of candy gripped in their tiny, little hands.  You can imagine, it doesn't go so well. ...more

I have a love/hate relationship with food. But it's probably not the kind that you think. After a seven-month ride through the system of local school testing, occupational therapy, this kind of doctor and that kind of doctor and yet another doctor's opinion, it comes down to this:...more

Alcohol May Trigger Food Allergies

As I've got older intolerance to alcohol has become a sad fact of life for me.  I had a very socially dependent relationship with alcohol from about the age of 15 [we start young in South Africa - and this was the 80's].  In years gone by summers would see me sitting somewhere outdoors knocking back G&T's, mojitos and chilled white wine like there was no tomorrow.  Winter evenings you would find me curled up on the sofa sipping a big glass of mulled red wine.As of about 8 years ago I noticed that red wine  made my cheeks very rosy&nbs...more

Mourning for Chocolate

I don't mind being 42. In fact, in many ways it's really great. I feel emotionally and mentally stronger. I know what I want, what I need, and what I dislike. My boundaries are clearer and I'm not afraid to say no. In so many ways, being 40-something is magic.Unfortunately, my body isn't keeping up with my spiritual growth. ...more

Cut Me Right Back Down to Size

Saturday I woke up just a few hours after going to sleep. Hot, sweaty, pajama pants feeling tight. I walked around the hotel room, used the bathroom - wow, my stomach hurt. Maybe I'm hungry? I got out a gluten-free muffin (packed from home, I brought over a dozen with me to Chicago), sat on the bed. Took a deep breathe and smelled the chocolate-chippy goodness. And I ran to the bathroom and threw up. Violent, choking, gasping for air throwing up and I knew it immediately - I was having an allergic reaction to dinner. ...more

Is Your Family Affected By Food Allergies?

Do you have children that suffer with food allergies? It seems like food allergies are becoming more and more prevalent. Why is that? My personal opinion, is that it has something to do with how germ and bacteria free we've become as a society. Last week was food allergy awareness week, so I thought I would use this post to look at food allergies and how some parents are coping. What are food allergies? From The Mayo Clinic... ...more
