Marriage Contracts: Should We Should Have Marital Term Limits?

Last year marked my ten-year wedding anniversary. I love the legal protections of marriage -- no one argues that my husband can't visit me in the hospital or shouldn't be able to pick something up for me or inherit my money. I love the psychological aspect of marriage, too -- but it's the LEGAL aspect of marriage that ups the ante societally from living together. The legal aspect is also the part that I think we should change: We should have marital term limits. ...more

One Psychologist's Perspective on Gay Parents

While I have strong opinions, I have never felt qualified to write a blog post about same-sex parents. It was not until I saw this particular video of a very successful college student in Iowa, who just happened to be raised by a lesbian couple, that I finally felt qualified. I felt within my realm....more

Promise of a Better Tomorrow

I do not watch a lot of television. As a matter of fact, I watch very little television. Most nights, I simply sit in the living room and soak in the silence after I get the children tucked into bed. Occasionally, however, I will flip on the TV. For background noise, if nothing else. Last night was one such night. I don't watch Gray's Anatomy religiously. As a matter of fact, it's been quite a while since I have watched it at all....more

Against Michele Bachmann and Her Marriage Vow Pledge

Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum became the first presidential candidates to sign "The Marriage Vow" written by a conservative Christian group. Even though the group has revised the vow to remove language that suggested black families were better off during slavery, the aim of the group is to protect monogamous Christian marriage as the only acceptable relationship, abolish the porn industry, deny the existence of homosexuality and generally regulate the personal lives of US Citizens....more

Gay Marriage and The Pursuit of Unhappiness

I've become more liberal as I get older.  I think that the more 'spiritual' I get the less 'religious' I get.  And the more I think about things, things like marriage, I start to think that they are constructions of society, they are not necessarily 'natural.' ...more

Wanna get married? (Plus a raw paté salad and the weekly round-up)

Wanna get married?Happy Pride Day!Today I feel so much pride myself. Proud to be a New Yorker. Proud to live in a state that has given the right to my lesbian and gay friends to marry. Because their love for one another is as real and valid as my love for my husband. So, gay and lesbian readers, if you want to come to New York to get married, I happen to be ordained (I’ve married four couples to date).  It would be my privilege!...more

Second-Class Citizens

Anyone with the ability to read can come to that conclusion. The hard part is getting people to admit it. Gay bias makes people turn away from cold hard facts. It takes ignorance to discriminate when the laws in place are on point! Imagine what you would feel like if strangers were deciding if you could marry the person you loved? Americans against gay marriage argue we are a democracy and the voice of the people shall stand ... always! ...more

Children of Politicians: Barbara Bush's Support of Gay Marriage

Barbara Bush recently made a PSA stating her support of same-sex marriage. Considering her father, President George W. Bush, was and remains a known opponent of gay marriage, it was a bold, gutsy and admirable move by the former First Daughter. We might all be able to learn a little something about standing up for what we believe in from Barbara and other President's kids. ...more

GAY MARRIAGE: "A marriage, by any other name..."

I'm attending my first gay wedding today. I'm attending my first same-sex  wedding today. I'm attending my first homosexual wedding today. What is the  politically correct term for such a wedding? Who cares? Frankly, I don't     understand the furor and uproar over same-sex marriages....more
