SNL's Amy Poehler Is One Of The "Smart Girls at the Party"

Comedian Amy Poehler is one busy lady these days.  She just gave birth to a baby boy, is developing a sitcom for NBC to debut this spring, is still raking in kudos for her impressions of Hillary Clinton on her former show, "Saturday Night Live," and now she's working on becoming an internet star.  Amy and two of her friends, Meredith Walker and Amy Miles, have teamed up to produce eight webisodes called "Smart Girls at the Party."

Are TV Shows Getting Teen Girls Pregnant?

Do television shows like "Sex and the City" and "Gossip Girl" encourage teen girls to get pregnant?  Well that's the finding of a Rand Health study published last week in the November issue of Pediatrics.  According to a New York Daily news article by Jane H. Furse about the study: Rand Corp. behavioral scientist Anita Chandra found teens who watched the sexiest shows were twice as likely to become pregnant over the next three years as those who watched few such programs.

YouTube and Videotaped Violence

Should YouTube and other online video sites be held more accountable for the increase in fights being posted on their sites? After that horrible incident in Florida a few weeks ago of several girls luring another girl to a house so they could beat her up, videotape the incident and then post it on YouTube, there have been many discussions about whether YouTube bears any responsibility for monitoring what's posted on their site more closely.

TV, Kids, Sexism and Me

Recently I discovered I'm a closet sexist, and this is the story of how it happened. As many of you may know, I'm a SINK:  Single Income, No Kids.  I am however lucky enough to have surrogate kids.  Their names are Cara and Milos.  He's seven and she's just about to turn five.  They're the kids of a good friend of mine and I've know them since before they were born. I love them within an inch of their lives and I'm ready to throw down with anyone who dares to think their kids are more adorable. Since I'm in the media, I've taken on the responsibility to teach them about the media, but of course only on the most simplistic level.  I talk to them about television, movies and commercials, and how sometimes, what you see isn't what you think it is.

10 year old girls commit suicide?

I've developed a pretty thick skin when it comes to the latest health scare or statistic. I've said before that I barely listen to FDA warnings and recalls. Studies that indicate teens are at risk for x, y and z don't faze me. I've seen too much and I've heard it all. I can't afford to get caught up in every horror story or every health scare. I share info. I track down supporting links. I mention statistics and I keep moving to the next horrible issue. That thick skin works pretty well, most of the time.
