My 'Grandmotherly' Self

BlogHer – NaBloPoMo March 2014Saturday, March 8, 2014 ~~~~~~~~ I have been my ‘grandmotherly’ self all week. On Monday, my youngest grandson became ill, so I was called in to babysit for him, while mommy worked. I came back home on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, our middle daughter came down from Kentucky, with her 5-year-old son and 7-week-old daughter; our youngest granddaughter....more

The Hip Grandmother's Day Out

Leaving the computer screen is a rather hard thing for me. But today, I decided to step away from the screen and get some much needed sunshine.  Today was the day that I would spend with the *other* grandmother going out to lunch and window shopping to get ideas for the baby shower. As I am getting ready, I feel a bit nervous of how I will be perceived..is the house clean enough?, will I get along with her?, will she be as happy as I am about this wonderful bundle of joy that is making her appearance in March?...more

An open letter to my grand daughter Victoria Renee

My darling first grand daughter,As I sit here anxiously waiting for your arrival, there are so many things I want to be able to introduce to you. This world, having so much negativity, also has an equal amount (depending how you view it) of so many positive things that surround us in our daily lives. I can not wait for you to have this wonderful opportunity to discover the many prospects in this life....more

New Sassy Haircut for Grandma!

At fifty-nine I was enjoying my long hair and the compliments of other ladies that thought they would grow their locks longer.  I heard that every man really wants their women to have long flowing hair that reminds them of a model.  I get it...but they don't have to take care of it and I don't look that great with it pulled back in a ponytail.  When I am singing, performing a drama or speaking I spray my hair with "mega hold" hair spray so that it is almost like having a hat on my head....more

Grape Orchards and Apple Vines

Today, in the 13th summer of my youngest granddaughter, she and I got into my car, put the top down, fastened our seat belts and sped away for a just-us time together. Sporting matching pink flower print hats with sparkly bling added for effect and curly pink ribbon ponytails, we waved picture-taking family adieu, heater on to mitigate a cool, misty morning. Even before we were out of sight the chatter began.“I went bungee jumping yesterday, Grams! It was scary but soooo much fun ”...more

Cooking with Grandma: Abuelita's Recipe for Sopa de Arroz

I spent some time last week in Laredo, Texas. My 90-year-old grandmother still lives there. When I arrived at her door and sat with her a while, she reminded me that I don’t visit often enough. Not by chiding me or layering our conversation with honey-dipped guilt. No. She simply did not recognize me. ...more
