Quinn, through Grandma's eyes

All of a sudden he's talking, seriously learning so quickly I just can't believe it.  When I get to Nikki's, I usually am greeted by her dogs Jessie and Sammy and Robert the cat.  They are ostracized for now because Quinn just doesn't understand that he can't grab tails and pull.  Hopefully, Mr. Q will grow out of this phase long before Gavin grows into it!...more

October is my favorite month of the year

Yeah, it's my favorite month.  My birthday falls at the end of the month so it shouldn't be.  But it is, because it is beautiful outside.  I've been busy helping my sweet daughter during the last few weeks, she is at the end of her pregnancy and just in need of momma's help.  (Thank goodness, I love to help her)...more

Grandparenting 101: There's Really Nothing Like It

“When you become a grandparent, everything changes,” a woman who works in the bank said to me. All my friends with grandchildren seem to be at a loss for words to describe how wonderful it is. “You can’t possibly understand until it happens.” “I can’t explain it -- you’ll see.” “There are no words.” Well, now I’ve been a grandparent for ten days. Amalía was born at 4:42 p.m. on August 26 -- and after nagging for all those years about how much I wanted to have grandchildren, I’m truly at a loss for words when I try to write about it. I think I’m still too new at this grandparenting thing. ...more

Yearning for What's Next

I can't decide whether to speak your name daily to refresh the air around me just as El Nino is doing out over the Pacific Ocean or whether I should play a game with myself to see how many days pass without me  talking about you to another. It's an easy decision. I will think of you every day to reduce the distance between New York and Beijing and to help keep you strong. Perhaps most importantly I do this to feed and water your roots from afar. Sometimes I wonder if you can see your future....more

I love being a Mom.

when she doesn't call or text I worry.  She's turning 29 in December.  Where did those years go? She is now a lovely young mom herself, I can hardly believe how fast my kids childhoods flew by.  ...more

OMG! I Can Spell! RU Sure?

I believe teaching is a natural parental (and grand-parental) instinct;  I can’t imagine ceding any part of that instinct to a machine.  And neither can I imagine our school system ceding its human face to a screen and keyboard. That said…...more

Learning To Pick My Battles

Often, I share about my grandfather (Daddy) and the love he showed his grandchildren. He really was a good man. He was not perfect by any means but he did not waiver on things that were out of sync with doing what was right when no one was around to see. One of his favorite sayings was “fair is fair”. Those words were usually followed up by “ball or strike”. One day, I am going to write a book about his poetic sayings....more
