Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2

Any Harry Potter fans out there? I know dumb question but I have to start with something. I just got back from the final installment in J.K. Rowling's magical tale, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, and it far exceeded my expectations. Well done!...more

No worries, no spoilers...HP 7 Part 2 and Mommy's First Night Out!

Last night, as all of America knows, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 opened in theaters.  The husband and I have been Harry Potter fans from the start.  Together we own 3.5 sets of the books (we have one set that we own just to lend to others, hence the .5 status of one!).  In fact, the very first gift I gave the husband was a copy of Book 4 to replace his missing one.  ...more

Farewell Harry Potter

I read my first Harry Potter Book in the Portland Maine Jetport. I was returning home from a a college board of trustees meeting. There, we raised tuition, talked about sexism in fraternities and the cost of heating a campus where snow could commence as early as November and linger until April.  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was my fly by night gift to myself, a simple impulse buy along with an Oh Henry candy bar.  I opened it in the terminal and never stopped reading....more

Things that make you go 'hmm'--the fate of Albus Severus and public libraries

I went to see the midnight premiere of the final Harry Potter movie last night/this morning.  I may hit a wall later, but for now I'm functioning OK.  I'm not a glutton for punishment.  I realize that the exact same movie will be showing in an hour or so, and I could have waited to see it then without the insane hours I just spent.  Normally, this is exactly what I would do.  So, what was the big deal?  For me it goes something like this: ...more

While Harry Potter fans are mourning the end of the HP movie series this week with the premiere of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2, I think we also ought to be thankful we got to experience it, and the books, in the first place....more

Daniel Radcliffe Stops Drinking Because He Can Stop Anytime He Wants

Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, 22, says that drinking alcohol is a problem for him, and he has stopped. The boy wizard's alter ego and the face of his wildly popular character for all of the films based on J.K. Rowling's legendary series, says that as he began coping with the pressures of fame, he drank too much to "enjoy stuff," and this is no longer the life he wants to lead. He told GQ UK: ...more

Bake Your Way to Harry Potter Magic With a Treacle Tart

With a flick of the whisk and a little potion proficiency, the sweet smell of treacle can appear in your kitchen as if you had your own personal house elf (a paid one, of course). The mild yet succulent flavor of the treacle is approachable yet charming at the same time. Much like a young wizard we all know and love. ...more

Harry Potter and the Power of Positive Thinking

As a psychotherapist who works with young adults, I often allude to pop culture in my private practice. So when my 20-something client and professed Harry Potter devotee grew anxious about a dreaded trans-coastal visit to her Dementor of a mother-in law in Los Angeles, I naturally inquired, “What Harry Potter would do?”“Well, of course, he would conjure his Patronus,” she replied....more
