Coakley vs. Brown in Massachusetts: How Did We Get Here?

A conservative Republican (didn’t want to give rape victims access to emergency contraception, questions whether global warming is man-made; called a local gay family with children “not normal”) in Massachusetts is threatening to win the seat that the late Senator Ted Kennedy, “the Liberal Lion” of the Senate, inhabited so powerfully until he died....more

Hurry Up And Wait: With Final Senate Vote on Health Care Complete, The Real Fun Begins

Vice President Joe Biden led the Senate this morning while his colleagues voted from their seats in favor of Senate Bill 3590 (aka "Senate Health Care Bill" aka "The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act"). The vote was 60-39 along party lines, as expected....more

Voters Want Abortion-Neutral Health Care Reform

A few months ago, I warned that some folks were attempting to misuse healthcare reform to restrict access to abortion. They have come a long way since then, endangering the vital struggle for healthcare — indeed, torpedoing reform is a key goal for many involved in this effort....more

How I’m dealing with my depression about health care reform

This is not the way I expected it to turn out. No public option, no Medicare buy–in for people 55-64.  But I don’t want to kill the bill.I spend too much time reading liberal/ progressive blogs and am dismayed by how many on the left are making the argument that it’s better to scuttle this bill. Many thanks to Nate Silver who kept me from falling into this defeatist way of thinking!...more

Support Women: Say No to the Bo-Tax!

I am an idiot. For almost five months now, I have been worrying that any national health plan that was passed by Congress would not cover abortion services. It turns out that I have been wringing my hands over the exact wrong thing. What really, really, really scares American women - including the president of NOW, Terry O'Neil - are proposals levy an "almost 5%" tax on critical women's health services: breast augmentations, facelifts, tummy tucks and other procedures. Gasp!!!! ...more

Abortion Should Not Imperil Health Care Reform

By Melissa Reed   The House vote to establish near-universal health-care coverage came at a steep cost to women. That cost, issued as an amendment by Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), eliminates abortion coverage by private insurance companies even when women are paying for all or most of the premium.  ...more

Stopping the Stupid - Er, I Mean Stupak - Amendment

Sometimes you don't need to be psychic to see the future. Back in July, I wrote about why I couldn't support health care reform unless it included the full spectrum of reproductive rights, including abortion. ...more

I Am Not Un-American

I've been hearing a lot about the erosion of family in this country lately and how it's due to all the "changes" our nation has gone through in the last few decades. When this subject of erosion arises it is typically followed with the reasons being gay marriage, pro-choice or women working more. I'm sorry but I fail to see how two men or women getting married and possibly starting a family to be an erosion of any sorts....more

Another Independent Bolts from Obama

I am a proud Independent bolting from Obama. This week on "Morning Joe" somebody said all the Independents were doing it. If so, this might be the first time I do anything "all" the people do. I think each of us, true to the term, has his or her own reasons. Here are mine, and they surprise even me for the order in which they occur....more
